Northern California - I crashed this morning.

My second clipless crash happened this morning on my way to work. I was a mere quarter mile away from the door when I remembered that I haven't reset my computer for the trip. So I unclipped my left foot and braked with my left hand while fiddling with the cpu located near the center of the bar. As I stopped I guess my right hand being near the center of the bar threw off my balance. As I was putting my left foot down I noticed that I was leaning to the right instead. As I was falling I saw Jesus in front of me. He held out his hand, pointed and said "Ha-hA!".
Luckily I used my shoulder this time and the only thing bruised was my bike. Tore the right bar tape, placed a hole on my saddle and broke my rear blinkie. I went home to fix the blinkie and proceeded to blow through every stop sign and red light in fear of stopping and crashing again.;)

Ouch!

That's when you close your eyes and calmly sing, "Jesus, take the wheel (or handlebar, but that doesn't sound very musical)". I hear it works for some but ymmv :D. Glad you saved the bike by sacrificing your shoulder :thumb:.

D'oh! Glad you're okay. This is why I always unclip both feet at the same time. You never know which way you're going to start to lean. :)

I always unclip and lean left. About two weeks ago at Middlefield & Shoreline I decided I was going to shake it up and learn to unclip/lean right. So I unsnapped the right cleat, coasted to a stop and s l o w l y toppled left.
To me, the whole stop and fall sideways thing is always good for a laugh. I've done it 3 times getting used to cleats/new cleats and been lucky/never hurt or even bruised.

you let your bike take the fall?!?!
you're the one that screwed up, how can you let the bike take the damage. I would've landed on my shoulder, roll onto my back and point the bike straight in the air to make sure the bike doesn't get even as much as a scratch.
you obviously do not love your bike!
nah, I'm just kidding, glad you're not hurt. I've done that a few times, unluckly, most of them were infront of pretty ladies.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I am okay, overall. I thought I came out of that unscratched but it looks like my left heel caught the big ring, somehow, and I now have a couple of cuts(flesh wounds, really). But it was a weird feeling being stopped and falling on your side. This gives me a good excuse to get that Fizik saddle I've had my eye on though. :thumb:

heh I only posted it because of his jesus laughing at him comment.
It's never really an official clipless fall unless it's performed at a busy intersection with plenty of onlookers to gawk and point :p.
Remember, it's very important to get up and inspect the pedal after you topple.
If possible, get out an allen wrench and adjust the release tension.
Mechanical failure. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

I did that at a Panera (rest stop) the other day and just about wiped out the whole club. I looked like Laverne and Shirley combined as one person...

+1, something is definitely mis-adjusted. :crash:
Laverne and Shirley will go faster if they pump up the rear tire! Shlameal, shlamahzal, hassenfeff incorporated... (not sure how those words are spelled...)
I remember my first "incident". I just bought my first road bike that day. Went for a ride in the neighborhood with the family on my shiny new bike when we came upon some fallen tree branches blocking the road. So I say to myself, I'll just stop and move them out of the way! Simple, right?
So I did the stop part... but forgot to unclip and it felt like I was falling in slow motion to my right!!! AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!! Blammmm!!! There goes the new bar tape, some skin and my pride!
About two minutes later on the way back my daughter cuts in front of me and stops... AAARRRGGHHHH!!! Blammmooo!! There I go again but falling to my left side! At least this time I fell in the grass and leaves!
But two falls in five minutes was not fun at the time, espeically on my shiny new bike! hehe!
Needless to say I still do it occasionally. Usually on steep hills trying to go up from a dead stop and not being able to clip in because my foot refuses to cooperate with the pedal!!! :trainwreck:

Only thing is I'm using crankbrothers. No release tension to adjust.;)

Don'tcha hate it when that happens?
I never fell over like that, though. No, MY clipless pedal accident came when I was just learning to use them. I clipped in the left foot, pushed off, then tried to clip in the right, missed, and I was looking down at the pedal trying to get my foot in when I rolled, at a slow walking speed, right into the curb.

I think I did that twice, unclip one foot and lean the other way. I decided for me it was best to be consistent (I always unclip the left as that is the same foot I generally put down for the moto).
I also once fell forgetting to unclip during an emergency stop following someone through the streets of Oakland...he wasn't very good at leading.
The funny thing is, the driver in the car behind me rolled down his window and told me I fell over because my seat was too high. I started answering, explaining that my seat was fine, but actually I fell because my feet were attached to my pedals. Then I realized that sounded even dumber and shut up.

Being that you had a foot available and was not clipped this is technically not a clipless issue and more of a driver issue, don't hate on the machine when it was not at fault. I mean why were you messing with your puter when you were just about to stop? Couldn't wait that extra 2s?
Glad to hear you and your bike are ok though. Ride smart and safe.

The blaming of the pedal tension was sarcasm.
*edit: actually it's more tongue-in-cheek than sarcasm.

Everytime I hear about one of these, I flash back to the old Laugh In gag where Arte Johnson falls over on a tricycle... wish I could find a clip of it.
