I currently own an 08 trek madone 4.5 and love it. My wife rode mine and she now wants to ride. Luckily she is the exact same seat height and frame size as I am. I went back to the LBS and they have one last new Madone 5.5 left for sale at $2749. I rode a few S-works, cannondales and Scotts, but I haven't rode the 5.5 madone because I wasn't sure it was was any different than my 4.5. The 08 S-works seems to be a nice bike, but they are way more expensive than 2749 for a full Dura ace setup bike. Should I spend the extra for the S-works or buy the Madone? Just looking for some friendly opinions. Thanks.

She should buy you a new rig if she is going to jack yours.

Just sayin'.

Give your wife your Madone and buy yourself a new S-works. :)

A Madone 5.5 MSRPs for like $4000 doesn't it?

That's a really good price. I paid $3800 last September.

Don't buy the Madone.

Also ... kindly PM me with the name and address of that LBS. Include their phone # as well, so I can call them and put it on hold until I get there.

**Yes, that is a hell of a deal.**

I always thought the best way to the wife's heart is to buy her the new bike and you keep your old one. The whole point is she wants to ride, right? Get her the new rig. That's what I'd do.

That's a steal! Bought mine last month for around $3200 and I thought that was good.

I wouldn't say ripped off. A few hundred difference is nothing. Besides if you feel you paid a fair price then that's all that matters. If you look at the other Madone thread I purchased the 5.5 over the 5.2 just because of the color. That alone was worth the extra money to me. Buy what and you will ride it more!

I'd definitely go with the '08 Madone 5.5.

The 5-series Madones are significantly different (and far superior) to the 4-series Madones. For starters, you get OCLV carbon vs the TCT carbon on the 4-series. You also get the integrated BB and the seat-mast.

errr....I think there is something wrong with that price tag on a 2008 Madone 5.5. That's getting pretty darn close to the cost of the bike for the LBS. The LBS I work at is still selling the 5.5 for $4k, and there might be a price increase for the Madones soon too.

I just got back from picking up my wifes new 5.5. The LBS ended up selling it to me for 2649.00. I also talked them into swapping out the stock seat with a Inform RL seat. Not too sure if the inform RL is any better than the stock seat, but oh well...I'll through another toupe on it if it sucks. So I hope my wife is happy...i'll be stuck riding the 4.5.

good man. that bit of generosity will allow you to complain how horrible your bike is in the future and allow you to buy another one

That bike has a fantastic color scheme.
It's msrp is 4,4000$ u.s.

add it up, well in this case it would be substraction. and alot of it.

good luck,

I don't think a 5.5 would be good enough. She needs something faster. One nice thing about it though, is that because it's a model that uses version numbers, you will know instantly when the bike becomes outdated 6 months from now. There will be no doubt about when you need to upgrade. So that means a lot of peace of mind for you until then. But 5.5, I don't know, that's a pretty low number. Might be a little embarrassing around town.

Wow. You just got a major deal on that. Congrats- I guarantee your happiness. And the Inform saddles are great.

Was this a NOS 2006 model? That price is difficult to believe for a 2008 model.

that's an absurdly low price, is that us $? wholesale on the frame/fork/seatmast iirc is approx. $1600 (2008).

Yeah, is that in Euros? Otherwise, your LBS is out of its mind for selling that bike for so low. They made basically no money on that sale.

I was attending a wedding in a small town that had one of the huge sports chain store. I went in and noticed that this 08 5.5 was collecting dust and asked the manager what they had for a price on it. He told me 2749 and I asked him to double check for me. And yes, a 5.5 is WAY overkill for both her and I but that price for a dura ace bike is crazy. I told them that the 09's were coming out and I'd pay 2649 and this huge sports center could care less about bikes at this time of year and I could care less about having the new 09 stuff, so I went back and bought it. I'll post pics of both toys.

My 5.5 pro was ordered, I'm still waiting for it. I got some speedplay x-2 stainless steels for it.. can't wait. has anyone got a chance to compare the SRAMS with DA? the pro comes with SRAMS and the performance comes with DA but its the same price. sometimes I wonder if I shoulded went with the performance.

I rode the 5.5 Pro and the Performance. Both were awesome, but both my wife and I liked the geometry of the performance and the DA shifting style. It's totally a personal choice that each rider needs to decide. I really want to test the new 7900 DA with the adustable levers! That new group might end up on my 4.5 madone along with some new "go faster" wheels.

Well I have 3 weeks to use my bike, I'll be hitting over to Iraq then. Its going to be a long 5 months knowing that I have this bike is just sitting there. Anyone wanna use it while Im gone? ;)

Competitive Cyclist is taking orders for the 7900 -- only catch is they want as much for the gruppo as you the store wanted for the 5.5

Ride the Madone 5.5. It's a different ride from the Tarmacs. I rode the 5.2 Madone on the way to getting a new Tarmac (not S-works, so can't speak to that). I very much liked the Madone ride. It's just a different feel, to me at least. Also, the new Madones have been significantly revamped. You need to try it out, and you'll know fairly quickly, I'm sure. Have fun!

Btw, under $3000 for a 5.5 Madone??? Is it a 2008 or 07? The 08 5.2s are around 3300. If it's an 08 5.5 at that price, and you like the ride, grab it. If it's 07, you're missing out on their revamp.

That's a wise man speaking. Buy her the new Madone now, you'll win major bonus points, and she will probably let you upgrade next time knowing that her's is better than yours. If you just give her your old one and you get a better one, she will feel like you're spending more on your new mistress (yes, that's your bike) than her.

We both have the same setup so we can switch whenever we get bored. These are our first two road bikes, so hopefully we should not have to upgrade for a long time...although my 6 month old might need a madone fairly soon.

I was told by the bike manager that this was the last one they had in stock (at this store), so the price was just for this one. He told me that he could order some more in, but they would be $3499.00.

That is an unbelievable price. Congrats on finding that deal. I've been eyeing those '08 5.5s and hoping for a price drop with the '09s just coming out. Not seeing much price change... except for the price INCREASE on the '09s... along with the component changes.

Trek seems to be selling them as fast as they can make them... which makes shopping for a bargain a tough deal... unless your LBS has several in stock they want to get rid of for the incoming '09s. (that's not happening in my area of the country).

That's interesting. I'd love to know where they have a store because the "original" MW went out of business (http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/2895.html) almost a decade ago. Later, an organization bought the rights to the name -- kind of what BikesDirect does -- and created an ONLINE retailer called Wards.com, which I believe is now defunct (also).

That's a very good deal. The problem in my area is that most of the Treks are sold by a large franchise, and if they come off msrp by 10% that's a lot. And frankly, in that case, there are so many other options, and some of them are better options.
