Bicycle Mechanics - Repairing scuff damage on levers and pedals?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Suffered a bit of a tumble in the gales on Saturday. Whilst the bicycle appears to be structurally-sound, the nice shiny Ultegra levers and pedals have been scuffed by sliding across asphalt. I'll remove the sharp edges with a file.

I know it's only cosmetic, but is it possible to begin to restore their original appearance? If so, how?

Sorry to hear about the fall Roland, I hope you are OK...

Been there, done that a couple of times recently. Taking nasty edges off with a file is a good idea, and you may be able to polish up the damaged areas a little with fine grade emery paper (400 grit, or higher if you can find it). However, any deep scratches are there for good I'm afraid. Its disappointing.... but you get over it eventually. I used to get rather upset by these things but realised the only way to keep the bike perfect is never ride it.

Cheers,

Ed

Thanks, Emery paper sounds a good idea.

Oxford? I'm there too. Do you ride with OCRC?

"Original"? What could be more "original" than some scratches, etc.? Your road rash will heal; the nicks and such on the components will serve as a reminder of the adventures you've had. Besides, you don't want people to think that your bike spends all its time hanging in the garage, do you?

Roland,

No, haven't got around to doing much club riding yet. I have been out a couple of times here with groups, but they were more casually arranged rides. Last time I got in over my head and was left trailling by a bunch of (admittedly impressive) riders. I'll look up the OCRC. Meanwhile, if you see a rider mashing away on a blue Dawes racer, that'll probably be me...

Cheers,

Ed
