Assuming ones were to ride around 60ish miles through OCish in search of good gelato, which shops would you recommend?

There is one off of Michelson and Jamboree next to CPK. It's not bad.

I can't recall the name, but there is one in the shopping center on Avocado and PCH in Newport Beach.

If you're looking for the serious yum-yum, I highly recommend Frati Gelato in downtown Fullerton. Great variety that changes daily, made on-site and Dr. Gelato is one kick ass gelato maker.
I believe the Velocity bike club folks start their rides right behind Frati Gelato from the parking lot of Heroe's.
Oh yeah, and they have Mexican Coca-Cola on site in 1/2 litre glass bottles for $2 a pop. Mmmm... Coca-Cola made with sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.

There is a good one in Altadena, might be a bit far or a good stop after the Crest...

Yeah, Rite Aid has low cost ice cream. If you just want a quick ice cream and really don't care about fancy creamy stuff, this is the low cost favorite.

Cafe Blanc I think really shines with their pastries. I tried a sample of their chocolate gelato and it didn't impress me. Instead I bought some of their pastries, took it home, and it was a great success. Everyone liked it.
