Introductions - Hi from I Falls, MN. I need a new bike!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey guys,

Glad to be a member of this forum. I hope to learn more about bicycles, styles, and differences between different types of bicycles. As an 18 year old I've been using BMX racing bikes for most of my life and now I wish to grow into roadcycling or mountain biking.

I'm going to the University of Minnesota this fall and I need to get a new bike! I'm not sure how big the off-road biking system is down there but I know they have tons and tons of paved trails so I was thinking of getting a cycling bike.

If you can point me to some useful threads or are willing to help me find a cycling bike I can afford I'd really appreciate it! I'm hoping to not spend over $700.

Thanks alot guys and I hope I can be beneficial to the forums!

Hello aarono26, you could possibly look at used bikes on Craigslist if you want to keep it cheap. A road bike is a lot easier riding than a BMX bike. If you are at all competent with maintenance on a bike, you should be able to find a decent used bike.

Otherwise, there's a thread in the Road Cycling forum which addresses the question of bikes and budgets.

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions :) !

Way-back-when the "off-road biking system" was the trails we blazed on our Scramblers through forests and abandoned fields in the 'burbs. ;) I don't recall anything like that near the U, so you'd be looking at a bit of a drive to find a place. There's a trail along the Minnesota River that's unpaved, but it's a fairly flat long muddy riverside trail.

You sure don't want to spend a lot on a bike you'll be leaving around the U. A stealth frankenbike spraypainted black or random colors would be best. ;)
