My wife and I are planning a touring trip to France for June/July this year. We have done a bit of touring here in Australia as well as New Zealand where insurance we had through Bicycle Victoria covered us for theft among other things. It doesn't stretch further than that. I also notice that most travel insurance policies cover $3500 in camera gear but only $500 per item otherwise. In our situation we're the other way around! In the fine print, some might also exclude activities such as cycling. Has anyone got any advice on what is the appropriate travel insurance for touring cyclists?
Thanks

While on the actual tour, I suspect if you can't get a piggyback policy with your homeowners, then you are out of luck..Maybe countries other than U.S. are different? I asked two homeowners insurance companies in California..No..California has few companies that insure homes..They are pulling out of many states, they say too risky or not profitable enough?!
As to insuring a bike on a plane...I asked my insurance company, travel agent, airline, and traveler insurance at airport lobbies...They would insure a bike up to $500 but you had to get policies covering lots of other items of which I had no interest.Like missing a flight or flight being cancelled..For only $500, no thanks...Good luck.
Maybe local bike advocacy groups or bike clubs in your locale would know...

I had no luck either getting insurance for the bike but certainly make sure you get good travel insurance...I needed mine big-time and was glad to have it.

Fuji..Before getting to the airport I contacted my insurance company and travel agent..Who else is there to turn to. ? Insurance companies used to issue 'special policies' on household items and sports equiptment..Here in California there are only like 4 companies that issue homeowners policies, I have read. They no longer want to do business in certain states.
My insurance company offers a diverse package of coverages but not for bikes. The only locaton I found an insurance policy was at the Los Angeles Airport. It was to be bought at a kiosk by Mutual of Omaha. The policy covered items like travel insurance, travel cancelations, life insurance;but the liability for contents, either damaged or lost was only $500.. Most of the cost of the policy was for insurance coverage I did not desire and only $500 for my bike. Barely covers the cost of the wheels !. And of course the airlines makes you sign a waiver covering their neglegience.... So the only policy I could locate was useless to me.
Anyone have better luck please let us know where we can find decent coverage...

ran a search on google for "bicycle insurance" and there are several companies in the UK that cover bicycles.

is one of them. looks like in europe they cover you like auto insurance. (wish they did THAT in the states) not sure if you'll qualify as your not a resident but you can try them or any number of insurance agencies in the country your going to. it'll probably cost you more than what your expecting though. i looked into a policy w/ this company as i'm planning on moving to the UK soon and it'll run me about 700 USD for one year. (not too bad seeing as i paid 6k for my bike, that's cheaper than for a car of the same price and covers me if i get hit... i think.)

anyway happy hunting

Maybe proportionately my coverage might be less. I paid almost 3K for my best bike. I travel to Europe with my best bike, I might want this coverage..Maybe it has more merit with BA...

right on that i'm sure. mind you, you have to allow for the difference in monitary amounts too. (not sure if i mentioned that or not) my 6k bike here is only worth 3k there so your 3k bike here is only 1.5k. i just think it's neat that they will cover you like auto insurance. i sure wish they would do that in the states. would ease my mind so much. we could go out and never worry about those hit and runners' again.
