How far south is "slightly"? Gilroy?
My team, Webcor/AltoVelo, has a pretty strong group of 4s and 3s (and every other cat- it's a large club). Lots of team tactics. It's based on the peninsula but there are members all over the south bay and beyond- I'm in the santa cruz mountains.
There are a lot of teams here. The early bird training crit series in january has a "meet the teams" day that's supposed to be useful.

http://www.lgbrc.org/ & http://www.teamsanjose.org/ both come to my mind, as well as AV. You should do rides with each and see which one sticks.

Lots of great teams in the bay area. I live about 200 miles away from my team which makes it a little tough but still workable.

Is it my breath?
NOOOOOO!!!!!
I started typing something along the lines of 'Not going out there yet... blah, blah'. I must've been distracted by a shiny object or a ball of twine.
But I have heard that your odor is quite prodigious.

Hey - I've already gradu-ma-tated. Twice. But I'm not done with my PhD. Unfortunately, my employer cut funding for it after I was already 1/2 way through, credit-wise, and 3/4 way through, work-done-wise.
With the hub-bub around here I started exploring my options.

Uh... yeah... sure. Looks about right on the map.
Haven't figured out a place to live yet. Hell, I might not even go out there.

Unless you like living in your car (or you have an employer down there instead of in silicon valley) you might want to live closer to SJ. Don't go by distances, traffic during the week is heavy. If you can, wait till school starts to check out commutes. Traffic patterns change a lot then as everyone here drives their offspring to school. I got burned by that last time I changed jobs- I checked out the commute and it was pretty good, then a week after I started work school started and traffic changed
Most of the good riding is on the west side of silicon valley but there's good riding to the south and east as well.
If you're out here and want to do some climbs let me know.
