Heard that Will flatted during the TT. Flatting anytime during a race sux, but after traveling to nationals that has to be extremely disappointing to say the least...

Our morning group ride goes through the TT route on Weds. This morning they were setting up the finish area. I think this 35k will be tougher than most 40k's. There are two climbs on the way out, and most of the return leg is false flat.

Good luck! Dial it up to 400W... for the whole thing.

Ugh, that's actually possible, isn't it?

hmmmm, I heard the same thing about Pete Cannel, the dude that won the 30 - 34 y.o. age graded TT about a month ago, and a guy that Will corresponds with about TT stuff. strange coincidence. I suspect sabatotage by Cali folks who knew the east coasters were coming to town to take all their mojo.

Hey guys, just got in from California. Thanks for the well wishes!

As stated previously it was not meant to be. Pete Cannell, Jon Chodroff and I were parked next to each other that morning. We had been corresponding and were all feeling that the podium was between us. I had beaten Jon a few times, but we were always close and he is a better climber, and Pete has put up some amazing times, right in the neck of the woods I had expected to be at master's nationals had I gone. We shook hands and wished each other luck...hell, we all used the sme pump to inflate the tires that morning (maybe THAT was the problem).

Bottom line, Pete and I both flatted and it was game over. Jon beat the second place guy by almost a minute, and talking to Pete afterwards, we were both on target to do a very similar ~44 minute time. Fortunately for me, the flat happened BEFORE the 50+ mph decent.

There is always next year.

Thanks again!

will, i am sorry to hear about this - i know how frustrating it is to train very hard for something, travel very far, lots of time and money invested and it not work out, especially for a mechanical.

Sorry to hear that tale of woe Big Hammer. Next year. You can take consolation by humiliating the locals in every 2009 race. You have that going for you.

At least your crank set didn't break. I was able to locate a replacement crank on eBay. Hopefully this one won't detonate. See you in the Spring handsome. You and that stupid dimply Prius (the car I wish I had). Hey, did you see the NEXT Prius yet? Nicer looking, slightly larger, quicker, better fuel economy too:

Note the larger wheels. Really a much better looking car.

that's a drag. it's that kind of stuff that has me skipping the masters track nationals this year.

Will, no support car right there with a wheel obviously, right? If you could even get somebody to go with you and carry a spare wheel/bike would that even be permitted?

Wow, that's pretty sweet. I like that almost as much as the Mazda5.

I think you could get your own wheel, but they said they would DQ you if you got a competitor's wheel.

There was no neutral support. Trust me, I was wanting it!

I presume 'getting a competitor's wheel' would involve knocking the guy behind you off his bike and taking it by force. The potential to liven up TTs as a spectator sport that scenario offers is intriguing to say the least.

Hey Will, sorry to hear about the mechanical, good to see you are dealing with it well. We have a saying in Ireland, this has to be said with an Irish accent "there's currants for cakes and raisins (reasons) for everything"

Will

I lost your email address when I cleaned up my address book to sync with this damn gadget.
So I'll post my private message in this public forum. :) I was sad things didn't work out
for you at Nats. There's a badge of honor in beating national champs and I was looking
forward to the opportunity ;)

Ken Harris is taking a stab at the masters hour record this month and I suggested you
might be willing to discuss some equipment ideas with him. If you are and want
his address drop me a line.

ps: the 'deer' thing is a bit. sigh

God that's gotta suck going all that way only to friggin PUNCTURE. Still, it's hard to feel too sorry for a guy who rides @ 29.999999 mph. At least at the TTs I can point to the fastest dude and say: 'hey, I KNOW that guy'.
