Bicycle Mechanics - How do I get seatpost unstuck?

I have a Specialized Hardrock and the seatpost is stuck in its current position and I can't get it loose. I can loosen the bolt, but the seatpost is "frozen" in place. I've repeatedly used WD-40 and alot of muscle to try to break it free without success. Is there anything else that I should try using?

It can definitely be a problem. `I have wrestled a few of these out, and had to give up on a couple of others. It's not like you can apply a propane torch to the seat-tube....

Instead of WD-40, try one of the dedicated rust-defeating products. I've used Liquid Wrench with success; there are others. When you apply the stuff, tap on the seatpost with a block of wood. This may help it penetrate.

Instead of pulling, take the saddle off and give it a couple of shots straight down with a hammer. Use a block of wood or something. You don't want to drive the seatpost in deeper, just break it loose.

Apply twisting force to thing. You can use the saddle, or if you think the post is junk anyway, just grab it with a big pipe wrench.

Thanks guys! When I applied the WD-40 I did mostly use a twisting motion to try to break it free. I had another bike in the past that was stuck much longer than this one, and I was able to break it free without too much trouble, so I didn't think this one would be such a problem. I'll take off the seat as suggested and try pounding on it a little and use some liquid wrench on it.

And you'll also find in many of those searched threads that it tells you to grease the seat post as well. If you grease it then you'll never have this trouble again.

PB Blaster works way, way better than WD40 in freezing up corroded and rusted metal-on-metal interfaces. In may cases, I'd spray PB on the post and let it drip down. Throw it into the back of the shop and come back the next day to find the seatpost had unstuck itself and dropped down into the frame.
