Hello,

I am new to this forum so please feel free to blast this post if it's in the wrong section etc.

I have an old ROAD KING bike which I am fixing up and the cranks are completely weird on it. The crank arm has a bolt that runs through it and when I remove the nut on this bolt, nothing really happens. The bolt seems solid through the arm. Also, the typical dust cap is nothing more then a solid circle. I can't access it, remove it or move it.

I am thinking that maybe the arms were pressed onto the bottom bracket but I'm not sure.

Any help removing the crank would be greatly appreciated.
I have attached a photo bucket link so that you can see 2 pictures of said crank. If you need more pics etc. please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

I can't see the photos due to firewall filtering at work, but by your description, I am guessing that you have a cottered crank.

If so, this page will tell you much of what you need to know:

Edit: Basically the cotter is the "bolt" that had the nut on it, and it needs to come out of the crank then the crank will come off of the spindle.

You need to gently tap out the cotter with a small hammer being careful not to damage the threads.

the best to remove it is by a cotter pin press. that way you can reuse the pin.

If you use a wood block and a hammer, it doesn't mushroom the tip of the cotter pin.

Gently? Come on, cotters need a LOT of force to remove and gently won't do it. The OP need to support the crank arm with a pipe or block of wood with a relief hole while whaling away with a BIG hammer to remove the cotter.

Well... cotters are pretty soft. Whacking it with a hammer with any amount of force will usually beat the threads to a pulp. Better make sure you have replacements in hand before you try it. They're pretty cheap: http://www.bikepartsusa.com/bikeparts/item/01-98554/ . I think you have the most common size: 9.5mm diameter, but measure to make sure.

Thank you for the posts...
I removed the pins and I think they are in great shape so I will attempt to re-use them and if not, I'll check bikeparts out...

thanks again for your time
