Tandem Cycling - Tandems with BB-30 Bottom brackets?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I wonder who will be the first to offer these and if it will be an option or a running change. I have no idea if one will fit the current eccentric shells.

After square taper, this is the first design that makes any sense to me. The industry has totally messed up this part of the bike, particularly for tandems with the ongoing shortage of outboard bearing cranks.

I went old school with daVinci cranks.

considering the BB30 was developed by cannondale and i think they are the only manufacturer using the standard that also makes tandems.. i doubt we'll see it anywhere before cannondale does it. of course it would require someone to make a BB30 tandem crankset and a huge eccentric... which is to say.. don't hold your breath unless you want one bad enough to pay calfee to make one for you

I'm reviving an old thread because it is still an open question as to whether anyone is producing a BB30 tandem frameset.

I'm not in the market for such a frame, but I just noticed that FSA now have a BB30 tandem crankset listed on their website here (http://www.fullspeedahead.com/products/466/SL-K-LIGHT-BB30-TANDEM). As mentioned above, the lack of tandem frames with BB30 shells is one problem, and the lack of eccentric bottom brackets that take BB30 bearings may be an even bigger problem, so that even if you wanted to get a custom frame built with the right BB shells you would still be missing the eccentric. FSA might be slightly ahead of the times here, but maybe there are some options that I don't know about that would allow you to use their new cranks.

The new FSA cranks are pretty light at just 1350 grams (without bottom brackets, which will probably add about 120 grams for two BB30s). However, Lightning cranks are no heavier and can be used in standard bottom bracket shells.

Co-Motion for 2012. From their blog:
We are introducing new models and great new features on existing models for 2012. We've taken a moment to highlight the changes for 2012, the complete info is available on our website. Our race-oriented tandems, the Supremo, Macchiato and PeriScope Hammerhead are equipped with BB30 for 2012; the oversized bottom bracket standard that has been an enormous success for road bikes. Performance-minded riders will be excited to see BB30 for the first time on a tandem, and what is likely the only BB30 eccentric shell being produced. We make it here, naturally.

Got a quote recently from Calfee and they listed the BB30 as an option to their frames.

Paketa offered us BB30 for the rear BB last year when we ordered our V2r.

What's the gain with BB30?

One thing is sure - moving to BB30 will still leave us with crank arms ranging all the way from 175 to 170 on major brands.
+1 on daVinci cranks. For us a larger selection of lengths is more important than the weight or savings or other features.
