I realize it is far too late but I think that these Olympics should have been boycotted for a number of reasons, one of which is China's very poor environmental record. I know a few of the marathoners are not going citing horrible air quality, if those guys are willing to walk away from this, you can be pretty sure that the air in and around the games is awful.
And then, there is the whole can of worms that is China's human rights "policies" but that is another thread....

There's a thread on this over in the road forum. But maybe over here SSFG can add their own special spin to it.
I don't think it is a protest. I think they are legitimately converned about their health.

I have a feeling the whole thing is going to turn into a flaming ****fest within a week.... 1972 all over again, but with hopefully fewer (or no) deaths.

^^^^^^^Unlikely. The Germans in '72 were weak and stupid. The Chinese may be Godless Communists, but they would know how to deal with Islamic terrorists. I expect security will be very good. It usually is where there is no freedom.

jesus. I had imagined more of the media finding out something they shouldn't have and the Commies making a huge stint out of it, but we'll see what happens...

My money's on it being closer to 1968 all over again. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tlatelolco_massacre)
I bet we'll see at least one big episode of violent government repression of a popular demonstration during the games. I hope I'm wrong.

I hope the Olympics become a huge embarrassment for China. I also hope no one gets hurt.
