Having just had my road surfaced in the chip seal from hell, I decided that it was time to take some roundabout trips home from work with the car to check on other roads that I might want to ride on.
It appears that August is a big month for road surfacing around here. Many of the roads I checked out have newly raised storm drains with orange cones sitting on top........a sure sigh that the road surface is about to be raised to a new level. Many other roads are in awful shape. I had assumed that the winters were the great road killers but it appears that summer heat and traffic really finishes the job.
Since this is the time of year that I move out of the woods and start riding the road bike more, I'm going to have to start looking harder for good roads.
Does this happen all over the country, or is this sort of a New England thing?
