I know NBC will screw up the coverage of the Olympic road race (and the other cycling events, too). So is there a way to get this online like cycling.tv or another source? I just hate the way NBC will cut in and out of a long event like this.

And who's going to win? Seems like Spain's year, so maybe Valverde?

i think it's on late friday night here...live on CBC. If you live close enough you can get CBC or its french network, Radio Canada. Their coverage is going to be live and then repeated in teh afternoon on tape.

Cyclingfans.com has a bunch of alternate video and audio streams listed for soccer matches today. I assume they'll have even more for the cycling coverage. Hopefully we can avoid all those pesty commercals, and hour long rider profiles that way. (g)

Valverde seems like a good pick to me, though I'd love to see an American win of course.

NBC is webcasting it live EARLY Saturday morning, like 2 am. They show 3 segments of the road race on Saturday's 10 am - 6 pm telecast (Eastern time). Check http://www.nbcolympics.com/cycling/index.html

Not only is it live online, but it's live on CBC television in high definition! Let's hope they stay with the race the whole way, otherwise we have the online feed as a backup.

CBC channel 3 is covering swimming right now instead. :notamused: (nothing against swimming, just not when the race is live right now)

Looks like CBC TV will be covering the race periodically, but cut away for brief features on other sports. cbcsports.ca has a live stream (without commentary) all the time online.

Yes, they've switched to swimming. But keep in mind that it is a 245 km race ... it'll take them a while. I'll likely be sound asleep by the time they finally finish.

FWIW the non-enhanced version has a written commentary _ not that much is being offered other than an explanation for the early nature break.

I haven't watched the olympics since 1996 so maybe I just don't know what it's been like but the fact that they only show this online and have no commentary is ridiculous. How much would it have cost to get even a US local-race announcer over there to talk during the feed?

At least that's what NBC will think.

Early nature break?

There's been an early breakaway by someone from Chili and someone from Bolivia. They are 38 minutes into the race and are still ahead.

And they're all just riding along chatting at the moment.

Windows. They show a brief few second intro then it goes blank. Moot now, CBC is back covering the road race.

:roflmao: I thought NBC had some way of blocking feeds at the provider level because it autodetected my settings the first time but this is funny!

An easy sat morning stroll for Z peleton.

There is a break off the front with a growing gap and the peloton appears to be indifferent of all things.

It's either the riders in the break don't have them worried, or the fact that it's the Men's Olympic Road Race.

I was having the same problem earlier today, but on a Mac. It looked like it wasn't transitioning from the stock intro clip to the live stream. It started working for me tonight, though.

Well of course they're indifferent. The ride is 245 kms long ... they're about 40 minutes into the thing ... there's a long, long way to go. If they are keeping a pace of 35 km/h, you're looking at a 7 hour ride. What happens 40 minutes into the ride is immaterial.

Plus, they are doing a flat section out to where they start the climbing loops. Who knows if the two guys out front have what it takes to climb well. You'll see the race change once they hit the climbing loops.

You would never see such apathy towards the race situation in a Tour or Giro stage.

There would be teams on the front controlling things and trying to pull whoever back for their sprinters.

But not here.

Just a MUP-ride-to-work-commute pace for the first 5 and a half hours hours, then they turn it on with 50KM to go.

BananaTugger
08-08-08, 09:51 PM
Bettini (Italy) is having a very long conversation with his team director, all the while grabbing the door frame of his team car. Normally he would get a reprimand for that. But this is a 245 kilometer race folks. The pace is super slow back in the peloton and Bettini feigns a few pedal strokes to make sure it appears that he is actually self-propelling.

LoLz

I don't think I've ever seen a race where the peloton got excited about pulling breakaway riders back this early in the race. These guys broke away minutes into the race and are already showing signs of fatigue. And they aren't that far ahead.

I am surprised (pleasantly) at how many people are there cheering them on. You can hear them yell, "Jia You!" (Pronounced "Ja Yo") which means "add oil." They use it to cheer people on in sporting events like we say, "yeah, go!" or "Kick some butt!" or the French "Allez!" -- same thing. Pretty cool. While I would prefer some commentary, it's neat to be able to hear stuff like that.

That's Cadel Evans. Yeah, it's the second time he had to stop. I hope he got back to the peloton before the attacks started or he's screwed.
