General Cycling Discussion - Get Rid of the Ad-Bot

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I really dislike the ad-bot. We're subjected to enough unncessary advertisements all the time in the real world, as it is. Is it really necessary to be subject to the ad-bot in the bike forums environment as well???? Please, please, please remove this unnecessary intrusion ASAP!!!

Two choices here:
1. Pay $25 and make them disappear
2. Make friends with Ad-Bot
oh...or
3. go away (but we like you...I guess)

Not a very friendly message...I MIGHT just go away...I'll consider donating when all the right-wing jerks are purged from the politics and religion forum, and not a moment sooner!

My expected costs for the forums for 2004? $4,238.75
If I could afford to pay the mod's minimum wage for the time they put into the forums i am sure that figure would quadruple.
As of right now, I am looking to make $22.00 for the month of Jan off the ads. (woohoo!)
Sorry, the ads are here to stay.

I appreciate your concerns about cost; but is it really worth $22 per month to subject us to / Abuse us with the Ad-bot??? That's $264 per year, about 5% of your costs. Like I said, get rid of the right-wing morons, get rid of the ad-bot, then maybe I'll consider donating; otherwise, no deal...

At that rate, the adbot cuts about $250 from the annual operating cost. without being quite as annoying as banners and FAR less annoying than pop-ups. I'm not a fan of it either, but a lot more than just Joe's time goes into this site. Plus the joke is on the advertisers anyway. They pay Joe to show me an ad that I completely ignore. :D
As for politics and religion, disagreement is the nature of the topic. That's why you have to request access. No way around it until you've converted everybody to your point of view. I'm still working on that one.

Let's see, put up some ads that a few people dislike and most ignore or are used to it, or spend thousands of dollars because one guy really really doesn't like them? Boo Hoo, deal with it. Donating shouldn't be a political ploy on your part, it should be about supporting a site you enjoy and can gather information from. Here's an idea, Joe can get rid of the ads just as soon as people start paying for all of the information/mechanical help/shopping tips that they get here. You can sign up first.

"when all the right-wing jerks are purged from the politics and religion forum"
Hey..I know how to do that! we need a funnel, some garden hose, vinyl gloves and several gallons of warm water with 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of olive oil.....oops, I misread-
"purged FROM the forum" Oh well, my way might make 'em nicer. ;)

Bad wording on my part. After the operating costs, I am on the way to pocketing $22 for the month of January. Some months require a bit more money out of my pocket, some months add a few bucks to my acct. In the long run, ads and donating members now cover the cost of running this site. Nice to know, after 4 years of paying for the site out of my pocket.

I wish it was that way. I get paid per click... I kind of hope that those who really enjoy the site, and thing they get more then $25 worth of information from the site will donate. As one member said "It's better then a magazine subscription!" :)
Randya,
I think this is a terrific forum, and frankly I never noticed that there were a bunch of right wing nuts in the politics/religion forum because I've never been there. I think of this as a cycling forum that is well worth the modest support I've given it.
Perhaps you will join me in supporting the forum and ignoring those areas with which you don't agree and are off topic. There are plenty of excellent and free political/religious forums for you to exercise that portion of your brain.
Personally, I find it easier to ignore the politics and religion forum than the Ad Bots.
Are libs always this upset?
I'm not. Big deal with some ads. It's not as bad as the ones on television...THEY yell at you.
I don't mind them. In fact once I actually went to some of the websites they mentioned to look up some information. So they can stay. If you don't like it just scan past it-BIG DEAL! At least they don't pop up everytime you entered a forum, if that would occur that may irritate me enough to leave the forum!

Lets see if i got this straight, you get something for free, then complain its not enough. Some of your "right wing" enemies would say this is typical liberal behavior.
Joe, I am grateful you provide this free service to the cycling community. This site as been a great help in keeping me motivated and "in the know". I'll click on more ads now that I know how you pay for this.

I hate to burst you bubble, but I have been private messaging Ad-bot, and he is a guy. But he does go both ways, if thats your thing :D
You should put and Ad-Bot sticky somewhere for us users that have donated and then when we feel like donating some more we can visit the Ad-bot and do some clicking...... :D
I agree there is waaaaay more that $25 worth of information here. As others have said, you dont have to visit this site, it is NOT mandatory you visit.
If you don't like the right wingers in the politics and
religion forum stay out of there. If they did leave
it would get awful boring with all those liberal yuppie
types agreeing with everything posted, no? :D
Is this site worth $25 per year to you? thats what $2.08
a month, or $.068 per day?
Not worth it? learn to ignore the ad-bot. There are other
options but I would never suggest that.
The above is the expressed opinion of the author and is in no way is the official opinion of BikeForums, The
administrator, or of any other moderator.

You get payed by the click? Does it matter wether or not it is a unique user each time? If it does not matter I will log off occasionally and click the snot out of them to bring you more revenue. Let us know and I'll pass along the word.
I have one machine that I use at work that has some kind of crazy cookie caught in it sideways or something and it won't let me stay logged in, Next time I'm on that one I will set a google ad clickity record heheh.
But please keep it the way it is, if I want to see those annoying things I will do it on my own...
Hey Joe I frequent mnay websites and none of them have adbots. Some of them have a small banner above that helps pay the rent.

I created the ad-bot. I tried advertising in different locations, and "hiding" the ads as a post, seems to get the best results.
Just donate if they bother you. I figure I've saved at least ten-fold the small amount I donated just on the free tech support I've gotten here.
And stay out of the lounge.

So what is it you want from the forum, then? Geez, if I purged everyone who disagreed with me, I'd get bored pretty quickly (probably because there would be nobody left!). In anycase, if you don't like what people are posting in the political forums, you're under no obligation to read it. Heck, you can even opt out altogether and not have it appear at all if you so desire.
There are times I wonder if there aren't just as many left-wing morons as right-wing morons out there.

Thats the last thing I want! Google is very good at tracking clicks, and I could loose my acct with them for that type of behaivor. Thanks for the offer tho ;)
I'm still waiting to hear if they have an ad for the Bike Friday, since I plan on buying one in the next couple of weeks, and I'd rather access the site via bikeforums....

So basically you want to have Joe lose $239 a year because you don't like it, and get rid of a group of people that have every right to being here as well because you don't like them, the last time I checked this is a public forum, not forums that just serve to you. The Ad-Bot stays, if you don't like it, tough cookies.

Let me ask you this question, if you were a racer, would you rather fork up the full entrance fee out of your pockett or part of it while the sponsor paid for the other part?

Another left winger that thinks everything should be provided for them for free or at the expense of others.
Based on the comments you made in this thread Joe could justifiably ban you. But I doubt we will be so lucky.

He/she would prefer others to foot the bill and then complain about all the right-wingers racing AND the excessive amount of advertising placards around the race course.

Nice Job on the Ad-bot design Joe.
Probably the least offensive ad I've seen on the net.
Compared to sites that load X to 9th power pop ups?-
Thanks..When the cash is more available I will certainly donate and keep the bot,
It saves the trouble of typing my search sometimes.

There are times I wonder if there aren't just as many left-wing morons as right-wing morons out there.
Anyone that subscibes exclusivley, or even partially, to any ideology can't be very independant of thought, nor particularly capable of discerning truth if everything has to be first run through a filter.
So wonder no more. The very fact that someone claims to be one 'wing' or the other indicates that they are indeed morons.

Concerning the funds needed to help support forums-
Neil (or someone-Neil ) is going to make a really sweet sticker,
A suggestion is that stickers are given with a donation to bikeforums?-Not a HUGE incentive- but a nice gesture. And may get a few more people to donate in small amounts- Say a $10 donation gets you a sticker\ say $7 after cost and mail goes to the forum? 605 stickers- no more Ad-bot.

True, but this guy wasn't making that claim directly. It was only implied through his discription of others.
