Who/what/when was it that the guy won on that snowy mountain stage? There is that famous picture of him all by himself in the snow. I think it was an American, wasn't it?

Hinault also has a very famous win in a Blizard. Of course he is not an American but despite what many say was very influencial in Americans riding in the Tour.

The famous picture is of Hampsten when he finished second.
Hampsten didn't win that stage, Breukink(sp?) did.

Winning the Giro is part of it. What else did he do in the Giro that year?

Hint. This is a fairly rare thing, about 10 times in each of the major Tours.

The way I would phrase the answer it is something only very few riders have done more than once. Eddy did it 7 times at least once in each of the Major Tours.

What an awesome stage that was. The riders that finished that stage now form a sort of elite fraternity. Andy's sadly unknown among all the Lancies.

I was lucky enough to be growing up in Boulder in the Red Zinger/Coors Classic days and saw Andy coming up. It was obvious he was special when he was like 19 or something - I don't remember. I have a particularly vivid memory of him powering up The Wall on the Morgul Bismark chasing a break wearing the young rider jersey and Levi's (not denim - just said Levi's because they sponsored him) shorts. He went on a training ride with us once when I was racing the Mini Red Zinger. I thought that was kinda neat (IIRC, we also road with the likes of Ron Kiefel and Davis Phinney) at the time. I think it's REALLY neat now and like to boast about it.

Did I mention I rode with Andy Hampsten? ;)
