Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Century on a Fixie

Is anybody signed up to do the New York Century (http://www.nyccentury.org/) on a fixie?

well... I am, and Im wondering if Im gonna need to call in sick the next day for work. Ive done 30-50 miles before, up and down and over the citys various bridges, but this is a big one.

anyone have any stories of doing a ride this long on a fixie?

no major climbs? think you could do it geared? if both true, i think you're worrying too much.

i did back-to-back fixed centuries at a dead-flat MS150 ride (46x16). riding fixed does nothing to complicate things...

yeah you're right. what the hell am I worrying about?
the only thing that I think about is no loooooooooooooooong coasting down the other side of the 59th street bridge or down the sloping hills of central park...
and the like.

Last year Paris Brest Paris was road on a fixed gear by, i believe, several people.

This year a team road RAAM on fixed gears.

You'll be fine. This is NYfixieCity, there are dozens of track bikes riders on the ride, every year.
If you really want to challenge yourself -Stay out partying all night, then do the ride wasted
or Volunteer with TA to setup the ride at 2AM, then do the ride.

PBP, RAAM, Cannonball and S2S here in Washington, FC508, HooDoo 500... People ride all sorts of crazy stuff on fixed gear.
If you're comfortable with the distance overall, then go for it!

If you want to coast, you can always just take your feet off the pedals/unclip and rest them on your fork crown or rear axle area... Just use caution when getting back in/on - coasting is quite feasible if you absolutely need the break.

And finding a gear ratio that you can work with for 100 miles.

Not that it matters for someone's local century ride, but I was surprised to find that the FC-508 actually has a rule against this. If you ride fixed for that race, you're rule-bound to pedal all 508 miles. For whatever reason, you're also bound to steel frame only, no aerobars, and low-profile high spoke-count wheels while a geared rider can ride carbon everything with aerobars and deep section rims.

E. Fixed Gear Division: Bikes must use the same fixed gearing (ring/cog/wheel) for the entire event. Bike frames shall be steel, traditional double diamond design (forks are unrestricted) and wheels (maximum 25 mm rim depth) with 32 spokes minimum. Aerobar attachments and aero-designed parts are prohibited. Wheel switches are permitted only for wheel failures, and must be identical or essentially identical to the failed wheel. Bike switches are not permitted. Riders may not coast with feet off the pedals. Riders must declare their gear (ring/cog/wheel size) choice at check in, which may not be changed thereafter.

If there is a class for a fixed-specific award it makes sense to unify the class.

im doing my usual 44 / 16 ratio on my 56 IRO Mark V.
I have those IRO Dark Matter wheels put together by Tony's son. anyone else have those? theyre awesome.
