Well, I finally did it! I have done 30 in a day, but never in 1 ride. Not anymore!!!
I am on vacation in the laconia, nh area, and it is pretty hilly, but I plotted a 30+ loop ride through some new areas and some areas I have already hidden this week. I put all the new areas in the front, so that I would be familiar with the route as I got further in and tired. Good thing I did!
the hills I put in were pretty tough for me, and tougher than originally thought when plotted on mapmyride, but oh well. Total climb was around 1000 ft, but it was concentrated in a couple areas.
the ride is here: http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/nh/laconia/887331707982
Starting out from where we are staying is tough, since we are on a lake in a valley, so right off the mark you need to climb out. The worst areas were in the new areas inside the first 15 miles. After that, I was familiar, having hidden those areas a couple times already.
Getting to Meredith was a push, but I grabbed a powerbar and a refill of gatorade and snacked by the docks of Winnepesaukee. From there, I rode over to Weirs Beach, which was the 1/2 way point. I tried to grab some water at a Dunkin Donuts, more for a quick rest before a hill, but they only had soda, so the woman gave me some cold tap water gratis-Thank you kind lady!
Once out of Weirs Beach, I was back on a loop that I did yesterday. I rode down past Governor's Island and down to Rte 11. The flats along Laconia Airport are nice because you can spin at a nice speed, and this was the only area of the ride where I DID NOT have a headwind. With the new gearing on the bike, I was able to cruise at 23-24 without much effort and not in my highest gear. Comfy!
From there, it was back to Laconia Center, with a quick stop up Gilford Ave to get another water bottle and cage-Since I normally commute on my bike, and haven't done long rides much, I only had one. They also had a Gatorade machine, so time to fill up!
Back through Laconia Center and home from there. There is one final climb over the hills that make the valley where the lake and the house we are staying at was, and then that was it.
Quick stats:
14 mph average
32+ miles total (with dilly dallying and such)
2:25 or so total time
I am very happy that I was able to get this in this week. I was hoping to do a 50 before we headed back home, but I think that I will wait on that, as there does not seem to be any real flat areas up here, and 50 in these hills might just do me in :)
sorry about the long post, but hey-it is a good milestone for me. Also, all of this hill work should serve me well when I get back home. It is hilly there too, but nothing like up here.
