Hi, I´ve been reading these boards for awhile now and thought it was probably time to register..
I`m 20 years old, live in sweden and yes yes, still in school :p .
I commute on my bike about 30 miles a day 5 days a week.
Wouldn´t trade it for the world!
But, one thing i´ve noticed is that on some days after my ride i get flu and fever like symptoms..
I feel warm all over, and generally crappy, like i was sick or something.
Anyone experienced this before??

Thanks for an excellent forum!

In general, or do you get the symptoms only in the winter?

Do you drink water throughout your ride and throughout the day?

What do you eat before, during, and after the ride?

How much rest do you get before the ride and between rides?

I get the feeling often often in the summertime after rides; for me, it's due to not taking in enough fluids or calories. if i'm out this time of year for extended periods (not even on the bike) i get the same thing, probably the same reasons, just more subtle. you're burning an incredible amount of calories when you ride in the cold, and afterwards your body is still trying to keep your furnace stoke while possible running on empty.

First off, see a Doctor for a checkup... make sure everything is ok before self-analyzing the situation or taking simple opinions. It may not be so simple as fluids or eating an energy bar. You might be dehydrated but those same symptoms also can speak of serious problems too... better to be safe and get checked out first.

It sounds like you're not just low on fluids but low on electrolytes. You can get them via "sports drinks" like Gatorade, but there are electorlyte powders and capsules (they're just filled with powder) that actually work out to be much cheaper. Besides, I'd rather just run plain water in my hydrators and water bottles, so that they're not as difficult to clean.

But I second I_T's recommendation that you have this checked out professionally, in addition to whatever you do yourself.

I´m seeing a doctor next week for a checkup actually.
Gonna take blood tests and all that.
Just wanted to hear if anyone else experienced the same.
I do drink alot of water all day but unfortunately alot of coffee too.
Sleep is a soft spot with me since I´ve basically been an insomniac since the age of seven.

Thanks for all the answers!
