Anyone know that area on the North side of Denton - Starting with Hwy 380 and going North? And North of the loop.... FM 2164, Milam Rd, etc.... is it a good safe place to ride? I'm looking for a place up around there this afternoon to ride about 40 or 50 miles but don't want to get on a highway with too many gravel trucks. Suggestions? Thanks!

You could ride as far up this route as you care to, then turn around.

Oh man, it's hard _not_ to find good roads up thattaway.

It's great if you're comfy on gravel roads, use this map and scout the (few remaining) iron bridges.

Otherwise, even the FM highways are usually low-traffic and many have good shoulders.
Also check out the Ray Roberts greenbelt trail.

One of the rides I went on went out northeast of town on FM 428, turned south on Elm Bottom Circle, back to the west to 428 and in. 428 has wide shoulders, great for riding, and Elm Bottom Circle has very little traffic.
The Turkey Roll route I went on went out 428 to 2153, north and then west to 455, east on 455 to 377, south to 3524, then to 428 in Aubrey and back. Mostly a good route, I think 455 was chipsealy. 2153 didn't have shoulders, but not much traffic.

Thanks guys - I only got Trumans response by the time I left here this morning. I had business to tend to in Sanger and wanted to get in my daily ride somewhere besides the West side of Flower Mound. I'll check out those other routes sometime, but the one today was fantastic. I parked at a park on Bonnie Brae just North of 380 and took off. I'm going to do it again sometime and go farther when I have a little more time. I only did 25 miles today - and it was heating up out here! Maybe some guys/gals would like to meet up there some Saturday morng about 7 and ride up to St. Jo or some place, have breakfast, and ride back???? I have to warn you though, my pace only averages on long distance rides about 13 - 14 mph. Don't get me wrong, I can go 20 mph and more, but averaging 15 or more is a MF for me - particularly in the heat.

That sounds like a good speed, but I'm down here in Garland, so I don't get up that way too often.

I just moved to Denton and also just got a new bike, well a new-old bike. Once I get it in a little better condition I'm definitely wanting to get in on some rides. Do you ever work on your bike? I'm kind-of figuring out things as I go along, so I'd love to have some company as I cuss at my bike. :-)

I do a little bit of work, but Bluebonnet bikes does most of what I need. I do have a good book though it explains everything you could ever want to know http://www.amazon.com/Zinn-Art-Road-Bike-Maintenance/dp/1884737706

After the HH100, maybe a couple of us guys/gals can get together in this area... I'm not ready to get out and ride with the local bike shops yet. I don't have all the fancy attire and shoes - just one cheap jersey, couple of bike pants, old tennies. You gotta look good to ride with the bike shops! Between now an the HH100, I'm pretty focused on "training" for it - trying to get mentally and physically prepared. Rode 30 Saturday, 40 today in the heat, and this saturday I'm going to try to ride about 60 or 70. After it's over, if I'm still alive, I'd like to get together with some folks and ride and learn a little more about bike maintenance.

I haven't tried riding with the bike shop rides. I get the impression you could wear a burlap sack just as long as you could keep up. It's a moot point in my case. Although, I noticed Don Johle's Bike World is now having a no-drop Saturday ride that would probably suit me pretty well, but I haven't tried it yet.

They have many group rides from Corinth or Denton all the way up to Pilot point (depending on the group, skill level and day).

I ride those roads daily. I try to avoid 455 (chipseal sux) but occasionally I will take it and on the east side of the lake I go down into the State park area to do some climbing (125 feet in 1/2 mile coming back up and out of the park area).

I live in Aubrey and I'm always looking for other riders to ride/train with in the area.

I'm down for meeting up on a monday or tuesday if anyone is off on those days. I live in the lake dallas area and would love to learn some of the roads. I'm not the fastest rider out there but I try to do okay.

Now that I've lived through a HH100, if any of you guys want to get together and ride a little, I'm up for it. For me, it has to be early Saturday, early Sunday, or I may be able to start in the late afternoon on a weekday. This coming w/e is not good... Reminder, I'm not a "roadie"... I'm on a tricross. I can't ride 24 mph all day long! I could probably manage 16 to 18. As my son would say, "Holler"!

Hey, I live in Sanger, well actually Bolivar. I would be down for a ride sometime, but it would have to be later in the year. I have CC on Saturdays. Lets get something going!

Thanks, I didn't know about that bike shop and their rides, so I'll look forward to those rides when I return to DFW next Spring (I live in Lewisville but am temporarily working in Washington DC until May 2009).
