I am converting a Cannondale Cad 3 from a crit bike to a fixed gear because the shifters are broken and I figure why bother replacing them when I need a fixie to train on anyway.

My problem is that it has a perfectly fine Shimanon JIS tapered bottom bracket, and I am having problems finding a 165 mm crankset that has a JIS taper. All of the Shimano stuff now seems to come with either octalink or their new system. I really don't want to change the BB if I can help it. This conversion is supposed to be less than buying a whole new bike!

Anyway, I have searched the WWW and found a Stronglight Impact 165mm crankset that is supposedly JIS tapered. I am trying to avoid using an ISO taper, just because I don't like mixing such things.

Has anyone used the Stronglight Impact crackset with a Shimano JIS BB? Any words of wisdom?

Thanks,

John

They have a couple 165mm cranksets.

What cranks are on there? The easy solution is to just use the inner ring with BMX chainring bolts. Or move the outer ring to the inside if you need the gearing. You sure it has horizontal drops?

i have a caad 3 and it doesnt have horizontal dropouts- check that cause it will be tough to nail the tension

I as well have a Caad 3 frame out in the garage just waiting to be converted to a fixed gear. The only reason I continue to procrastinate on it is that I am going to have to put an Eno (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=22472&subcategory_ID=10044) hub on it because of the vertical dropouts. One could probably get by with finding just the right gear combo and possibly putting on a half link. However, I want to make mine so I can change the gears as I desire.

I am putting an ENO hub on. The current cranks are 172.5 mm Dura Ace. I want to match my track bike and put on 165 mm cranks, which is why I need to find a crank set that is compatible with the old Dura Ace JIS taper BB. That is why I am seeking advice regarding compatible cranks.
