Last Sunday I rode 44 hilly miles, finishing up in just over 3 hours. The trip was gorgeous and I felt good during the ride.
I took a nap and when I woke up I felt like death warmed over. It was if the ride (or the nap?) triggered a viral URI.
I felt poorly all this week, to the point that I didn't take my customary ride on Wednesday. The symptoms were are viralish: aches, pains, mild sore throat, and the ever present profound fatigue.
Tomorrow is a 28 mile club ride. I've checked out the topography and the first 2/3 of the route is fairly flat, which means I should be able to hang. The starting point is 6 miles away, and, wanting to warm up and keep my carbon foot-print smaller than Al Gore's bathroom, I'd feel obliged to ride over and back.
Which means 42 miles after taking the week off for not feeling well.
Next week I'm covering for a vacationing colleague, which means I won't have much time to ride. So I'll ride tomorrow, if I have to drag an oxygen cannister behind me.
Does this make as little sense as I think it does?

Perhaps you have the flu?
Perhaps you should REST?

What's a URI ?
afternoon naps often leave me feeling loggy. I'm usually better off staying busy and then going to be after a decent dinner.
I had something similar last week. I raced in the mountains at 5000 foot elevation in some smokey air. During the race, I was okay but after I was coughing. However, the smokey air affected most of us that way. The next morning I had a mild sore throat and was still coughing from the race. I did the Zicam thing and the cold progressed as what I would call a low grade cold. Cold like symptoms but not very severe. I continued my cycling as normal but with reduced cardio capability. I am fine this week.
I have never found that exercise induces illness in me. I think it was hanging out with my buddies and shaking hands / contact that gave me the cold.
I went for a 50 mile ride last week and felt fine. I didn't talk to anybody the whole ride and when I got home, I found out, that I couldn't talk. The next day was a little better and the next I was OK again.

What's a URI ?
I'm not a physician, I didn't play one on tv, and I haven't stayed at a Holiday Inn Express lately; however, and unfortunately, I did smoke for quite some time and have had a number of Upper Respiratory Infections. That you are not knowledgeable of or accustomed to having them is a good thing, and since I have quit smoking, I'm having far fewer of them than ever before.:)
And back to the OP, you have my sympathies for those symptoms.
Hope you are able to ride through them and come out well on the other side.

...and since I have quit smoking, I'm having far fewer of them than ever before.:) My experience was the opposite. I began getting them more often when I quit smoking. My conjecture is that the crud in the smoke hurt the germs and viruses more than it hurt me. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/deraltekluge/Avatars/whistling.gif

I thought it had something to do with Uri Geller, as in TWL having inadvertently used brain waves to bend the frame of his bike.

Is he adequately equipped to do that?:D

Not the warm words of encouragement I was hoping to receive :(
So I rode, @43 miles my 5th longest ride to date.
As I predicted from mapping out the ride yesterday, I hung tough for 2/3's of the race, er, easy-going group ride. We then hit the hills of Sleepy Hollow and, as is my custom, I couldn't hang and rode the rest of the way in blessed solitude.
I will say that with every attempt I make at group riding, I get just a little stronger. If I'd lose 20 pounds or so, I think I could hang.
1. I've never seen so many cyclists on the road today, barring tours and special events. I must have seen over 100 cyclists. And why not? It was 59F at 7:20 when I started, and not a cloud in the sky. The route went from Diane Sawyer Park to Da Boonies. Gorgeous, I tell you.
2. I'm catching the road race on TV right now. Dang, those guys are going so slow even I could keep up with them. For now.....
So it sounds like you completed the ride and feel OK now, and that's good. But I was going to say "yes, it makes as little sense as you think it does". :D

I agree with Denver! All the training books talk about one consequence of overtraining is to run down your immune system and become susceptible to flu if not worse.

neck up problems Ride, neck down problems (flu cold sysmtoms) rest.
I don't think there are any influenza bugs floating around this time of year.

Sounds like a good recovery.

I would suggest taking an easy ride first, see how you feel before you push to 40+miles.

A park named for a TV talking head?
For what it's worth, I did a very heavy workout today, took a nap and now I a hurt all over.
Hate to think what I'll feel like tomorrow when I get up and "TRY" to get on the bike.

The Sawyers are old Louisville money. It was originally their property and they gave it to the county.
