Mountain Biking - What year did they stop 7 speed on Raleigh M-80 (and is this bike worth it) ?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm considering getting a used Raleigh M-80 off craigslist. I'm going to see it tomorrow.
Guy says he bought it in 2004, but it only has 7 speeds, and no disc brakes. Is he mistaken ?

Price is $200. I know that the Jett suspension sucks, but I'm mostly gonna use it as a commuter bike.
I could skip it and go for a new Iron Horse maverick for about $350-375:

Perfomance bike has a store in my city so they will assemble it.
What do you guys recommend ?

$200 seems steep for something that was about $450 new and it's 4 years old while not being anything special. $150 seems more reasonable.
However, if you're mainly after a commuter bike why not buy something designed for road use rather than bodging a heavy frame into an unintended use.

The roads are not all that good, and I will be going on/off curb, so I'd rather have a MTB.
I doubt that he will agree to 150, he originally wanted 275 for it. Its a university town so used prices seem kinda high.
But if the bike is older than 2004, that changes things, hence my question.
You recommend I go for the ironhorse ?
there is no way that is a 2004 model
based from this site they stopped putting 7speed on the m-80 in 1999

I assume you mean 1997 ? They seem to have 8 cog rear wheel in 1999 ?

Anyway I got it for $150. Fair price I think. I do wish it was a bigger size though.
