Ok, I've mounted up just about every shoe cleat combo I can think of....except Speedplay and Sidi. So, I just got my Zeros in and want to mount them to my shoes. I get everything except wether or not I use the plate that I used underneath my Look cleats to make the soles flat. Do I mount them onto that plate, or in the recess left by removing that plate??? Seems it will fit either way. Thanks.

the speedplays come with 2 wedges that replace the plate.

I have the x-2's, and mounted the cleat to the sole without any space plate. No problems whatsoever..

Thanks. I just wasn't sure because the instructions didn't say specifically either way and the contour of the Sidi shims fits both the recess and the plate. I'll put them on in the recess without the plate then. Thanks.

The correct shims have SIDI printed on them, or did the last time I mounted a set.

yeah I just got some X-series for Xmas... and some Sidi Energy's... just use the Sidi Shim that comes with Speedplays, and you'll be good to go

How about those speedplay pedals, are they good? At least look good...

I dig them.. I've been riding them about a month now... the first few rides were a bit odd, until I got used to the feel of them... I went from SPD's to Speedplays... they have great float, and are supposedly grerat for knees...

I won;t ride anything else now...

I've had mine a little over a year and like them. Very easy to use, and I've never unexpectedly come out of them. I believe mine may be the X3, they are the chromoly ones, which are the most cost effective, i.e. cheapest of the three. As others have posted, cleat covers are nearly a must, because it's easy to get mud/dirt in the locking mechanism and the metal would be really tough on floor coverings.

I love the Speedplay pedals. I've been using them about 4 years now

I've been riding Speedplay Zeros with Sidi Energy for two years now and have put over 10,000 miles on them. They are a wonderful combination. And yes, I second the cleat cover recommendation because you can get gunk in the cleats. However, that said, I had to walk through sand with my exposed cleats on my last ride and when I went to try and clip in, things were tough but I was able to actually get the mechanism to work. A few squirts from the water bottle cleared things up enough so that I was confident in being able to clip in and out albiet with considerable difficulty. After washing the shoes off in a sink at a nearby park and dropping some lube from the small bottle I keep in my seatpack, the operations returned to normal.
