and screwed up my knee! I may have some ACL damage. :( I'll know more when the trauma goes down enough to get good images. As it sits right now, though, I'm icing it and taking my Lortabs........I'm HONKED OFF though! We were going to take a little weekend tour this weekend....the weather is supposed to be spectacular. :(

I feel your pain Tom...Stepped in a hole up to my knee when on a backpacking trip 7 years ago and still feel the effects from jamming my hip and back. Got my ACL replaced 3 years ago after destroying it while demonstrating a martial arts training machine at a convention.
Holes Suck!
Screwing up your ACL is Definitely no fun either.
Good luck with the diagnosis and treatment.
(Luckily one of the things they recommend for PT is cycling...when you're ready for it.):injured:
Here's a wish for a speedy recovery and STOP HURTING YOURSELF!!!
You're using everyone else's share of the injuries....in all fairness you must stop hogging all the booboo time.:P
Get well soon - I'd try and shill powercranks on ya for acl rehab but I'm hoping it's just a sprain.

I'm hoping it's a sprain as well. Pain is all on the outside of the knee though. On the good side, I can move the foot without sending twinges up to the knee and even exert pressure upward on the foot at the toes without sending me into orbit, so that's a good sign ;) I just can't straighten the knee all the way and walking is painful.
Doh! :(
Here's hoping it does turn out to be just a sprain. I did all sorts of damage to my knee in a bad dislocation in 2001, so I feel your pain :(

Hopefully it's just a spain. Your movement and pain kind of sounds like an MCL sprain, which seems to be a right of passage around my house.......
Too bad about the weekend too. We're having some uncharacteriscally cool weather here too, as in lot's of hours less than 95, for the last couple of days.
Get Well soon!
That's what you get for stepping off the bike ;)
Sorry to hear you will miss your weekend ride. Get well soon!
Man, I am hoping it is a sprain too.

Here's to a speedy recovery, and I hope that it's not too serious!
A couple years back I was kneeling down tying a line to a fishing hook and when I stood back up to cast, my knee popped out and right back in. Hurt like the devil for a little bit but I could walk around OK, I just couldn't kneel or sit seiza for my karate class which was a pain.
This isn't quite the same degree of issue you're having, but since we're all sharing.... :D

Sorry to hear, Tom. It seems knee issues abound in the clyde forum! I hope for your sake that it is justa sprain, though. There will be other weekend tours, but you only have 1 knee per leg, and they are a PITA to replace!!!

Tom is generous that way. He offered to take my fractured rib for me, but I declined.

Dang! I hope it all turns out well for you. I've been through all that ACL recovery with the knee, so give me a holler when you find out what is going on.

With your luck this year, maybe you need a chaperon?:)
Hope it's not serious!
Take it easy for a while Tom, and do whatever the doc says. You will be back in the saddle in no time.

tom hopefully its not a tear since that would be brutal.i have a feeling it might be a major sprain since pain is from outside .it took me 17 months to heal and i put on 110 lbs during that time.so far ive lost 45 of tose pounds so far.if it is worse case scenero and you need surgery id opt for the graft one so you would get 100% range of motion back

Update: Swelling is down considerable, and pain levels are down.
atcfoody: We redid the anterior pull test-less motion and pain, significantly! I wonder if I had a dislocation to a small extent? Maybe the pull test yesterday reseated my knee was why it was so suddenly massively painful? Ortho Appt tomorrow, though and I'm already a lot more mobile.
I did the RICE regimen (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation is what the acronym means, for those of you that haven't heard of it). I used Blue Ice packets and placed them on both sides of the knee to sort of act as splints.......worked like a charm! They stabilized AND chilled my knee, and they seem to have shut down the histamine reaction very nicely!

That's funny, we are doing a fitness contest at the gym and one of the questions I was asked yesterday was what R.I.C.E stands for... I got it right and I'm in the lead!

Tom, that SUCKS big time. Fingers crossed that it is not ACL. Keep up the RICE and take it easy.
Owy. The simplist little things like that cause injuries all the time. Lots of injuries on the clyde forum lately too. I hope that it continues to feel better, the doctor visit goes well, and that you are back to riding really soon.
Take care.

Does the hole resemble something like this:

sucks man, i guess this will make you stronger right? (assuming you aren't destroyed)
I blew out my knee a few years ago and started cycling not long after (since I couldn't keep playing soccer or football). Good news, I haven't had much knee related pain or problems while riding. Just a little soreness after LOTS of riding. Get well soon!

Tom if this makes you feel any better, remember the earthquake we had two weeks ago? Well they evacuated the building (whatever for I don't know) and I had to go down 10 flights of stairs. No biggey but at the very last one, being stupid, I twisted weird and totally jammed my knee. In front of tons of people, I crumpled. Yeah nothing more embarassing then an old fat chick falling down stairs!!! Of course I had to get up quickly and walk away like it was nothing. I got to my car and could nothing but lay in back wincing. It really hurt. Anyway the knee has been tender since but I'm still riding (probably like an idiot).
It sucks getting old doesn't it?!?!;):p

Fingers x'd (not knees). You've been incredibly resilient so I reckon we'll have you back real soon.
You just may have to withdraw from the summer olympics, but other than that ...

I'll find out tomorrow, knee was xrayed today. I'm to continue to use the cane for a few days at least though and stay with the RICE no matter what and let things heal.
The knee is feeling significantly better though.

Crappy to hear all this, heal well. Once the docs clear you, then go see the Physical Therapist (PT) and see what it takes to get you riding again. Make sure that it's an athletic or sports oriented PT. Heck with the stuff you have done to yourself the last couple of years, you should be getting frequent user points at the PT's office by now. One good thing though, the PT will probably recommend bicycle riding, with low gears, for the knee :D

XRay results are in......great news! I do NOT have a blown out knee. I do have a loose knee though and there were indications of a bit of excessive cartilage wear. I'll be wearing a brace for running, but no running for 2 weeks and some PT to strengthen the knee back up.
It seems the Dr agrees, I had dislocated my knee when I stepped into the hole, and when the wife did the anterior pull, she in essence re-seated the knee back in place. No biking for another week, and then back at it. :D No hills, spin easy and strengthen the knee, and he says the cycling is the best PT for the knee, along with some exercises he set up. :D

Great news Tom. It's WAYYYYYYY better than the alternative.
Docs and PT's love stationary bikes for therapy. After my last knee op, they had me on the bike in less than a week. Was kind of weird crutching over to the stationary bike and then paying for every sin I had ever committed just to get that stupid pedal around one time, but hey, it worked.
My pleas to wait until I could at least walk were met with evil chuckles.

Tom; man am I glad that we were wrong on the ACL part of your injury. I often tell my athletes that "this is one of those times I would be happy to be wrong" when confronting an injury like that, so I'm glad that was the case here. Get well soon, and keep me/us posted.

Hey, I'm glad we were as well! Symptoms indicated that, though, or a worn knee as a lower probability. ;)
It's the worn knee. :p

That's kind of what I was thinking...
This knee injury, the wreck where you smashed your helmet (better than your head!).......what other injuries this year?
Tom Stormcrowe
08-14-08, 05:06 PM
From the same helmet smasher wreck:
a distal radial fracture of the collarbone (5mm deep split in the outer end of the collar bone).
Aggravated rotator cuff.
Bad road rash as well in the wreck.
Traumatized rib/intracostal muscle in the right chest wall.
That's kind of what I was thinking...
