I just wanted to mention something I've been recommending to people I know for
awhile now. I have a bank account that hasn't cost me a cent in service charges
over about 5 years, and has paid me about $500 during that time. This includes
1% in grocery points for everything you buy with the credit card they issue. It is
called President's Choice Financial and is available from the Loblaws Superstores.
When I got the account they were just starting it up and had bigger bonuses for
a lot of things than they do now, but it still seems like a really good deal. they
even supply checks for a checking account free. They do have charges for some
things like nsf checks, but fortunately only for things I've managed to avoid so far.
They have an instant teller in each Superstore, and you can use the bank card
they give you at any CIBC (Bank of Commerce) machine without charge, at least
for the transactions I do. My daughter mentioned her bank service charges come
out to about $15 a month and that kind of got to me. It seems a bit of a rip off to
have a bank charge you for keeping your money there.
Because of the partnership with CIBC, money there has the same guarantee as in
any other bank, and I can't think of any disadvantage to it though I don't mind
learning if there is one. They have also mentioned a lot of times that they have
the lowest mortgage rates available just in case that comes in handy for any one
else. (It won't for me.)
You can do your banking by phone or on line and the 1% back on credit card
purchases is redeemable each month ($20 minimum). Actually I just remembered a
disadvantage. They don't have a bank counter or in person banking so when I
needed a money order I just went to another bank and bought it there.
Just in case this comes in handy for anyone. It is a bit off the bicycling topic, but
I don't think this is available outside of Canada, so this forum sorted by region
seemed like it might be a good idea, but I won't get grouchy if the post gets
punted around a bit.
best wishes, lloyd
