Hi. I’m been lurking for a while and I’ve read a lot of different posts about what bike to choose, etc. But I figure I’d ask my own question.
I’m 51 and in pretty good shape, although my right knee is not, so I gave up running/jogging. Haven’t been doing any steady biking since I went mountain biking regularly about 5 or 6 years ago and my trusty no suspension Univega was stolen. I’m a big guy at 6’4” and 230.
Looking for an all around bike that can handle the city streets (50%+) and some off-road stuff like fire roads, dirt paths and a little light gravel. I’m not looking for speed, but rather a relatively comfortable smooth ride, good handling and most of all a fun ride… A bike that won’t discourage me from riding. I won’t be doing any rough mountain biking, as my knee can’t take too many more spills. I’d also like to get something that would be good for some long rides as well. This will be my main source of exercise and fitness.
This time of year is really hard because a lot of shops don’t have the new 09’s yet and they have very little to nothing in my size for the 08’s or earlier. I have a vacation in Maine coming up and I’m just real eager to get out there and do some pedaling. I was thinking about a non-racing Cyclocross style bike, a touring bike or a nice hybrid. Budget up to 1,400.
Any of your thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated...Thanks so much!
