Alt Bike Culture - inside gears?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
hey does anyone know what I am talking about when i say "Inside Gears"? Most the commuting bikes i see here in Denmark have the gears on the inside, but I can not figure out what they are called to search for parts. My girlfriends bike has shifters, but when i look at it, i do not really see a cassette, it just appears to look like a single speed, but it apparently shifts three gears, the bike she had before till it was stolen had five gears. I really want to know what they are called, if anyone has any idea or what websites sell them it would be very helpful

Normally, a 3-speed is just called a 3-speed. Also, you'll see the Sturmey-Archer and Rohloff names connected with this a lot.
