I run 9 speed on all my bikes, and no problems except for the gearshifters. One set is Deore, and the other two have LX. They are all Shimano, and I will not change from them. The shifters work fine, but the perspex over the Indicator is now so cloudy, you cannot see the indicators. On the solo's no problem, but it does cause a problem on the tandem. (No chance of looking between your legs to see what gear you are in and work from there.) Does any one know if it is possible to clean the cover, without wrecking the change unit/ or/ has anyone experience of XTor XTR shifters, being better sealed to stop the problem re-occuring?

Take a blow dryer (what your wife uses for her hair), see if that clears it up. As far as preventing it from happening again? I have NO idea!

If the fog is caused by water then maybe a water repellent like WD-40 would help, just spray a small amount into the shifter, or smear a little on the inside of the plastic screen itself. Be carefull not to use to much WD-40 on your shifters as it may react with the grease and cable cause'ing it to stick or stiffen, but a quick squirt should be fine.
Also you can buy demister spray for the inside of helmet visors that stop your breath from condensing and causing fogging, it may work for your problem also?

Be careful with the WD40, since it's solvent there is a good chance that you'll permanently fog that plastic. It may (due to it's petroleum distillates) have a chemical reaction with the clear plastic.

Thats what I thought stepfam's problems was at first till I read the thread, so actually as cyclenut pointed out (thanks) try a non-solvent based oil to repel the moisture.

I took the indicators off my XT's, why do you need them at all?
Yeah.. it's not like they do a whole lot anyway. I don't really care what number gear I'm running as long as it's comfortable and the one I need to be in.
I took mine off after the left one stopped working. I missed them for a ride or two but after awhile you know what gear you are in instintively and you never even look. Road bikes have no indicator at all...
