I've been a commuter for a little while, and decided that it would be cool to meet other cyclists. One of the local bike clubs has "slowspokes" rides, and I figured that would be my pace.
There were probably about a dozen people that showed up. Everyone was friendly. I was the only one on a recumbent, but there was one couple on a tandem. I was the only one with plain platform pedals. I was also the only one not wearing cycling shorts.
This was a thirty mile ride through the country, and I rode about seven miles to get there. Most of them drove their cars there.
Early into the ride, we split into groups. The fastest disappeared ahead of me, the slowest disappeared behind me. I was alone for most of the 30 miles. It didn't feel much like a group ride.
There was a truck stop mentioned on the cue sheet. I hoped it was a regroup point. I stopped there, nobody else did. I didn't even see the slow group.
I continued on, following the course was easy. The cue sheet was easy enough to figure out. When I got back to the start location, almost all of the cars were gone. Just a few left (from the slow riders), but no riders left.
I waited for 30 minutes for any more cyclists to show up. They didn't. I rode the seven miles back home.
I was a bit dissappointed in the "group" ride. Is this that common?
On the bright side, I rode about 50 miles on a beautiful Saturday (including a couple of errands around town), I got a tip about my route to work, and a learned a new weekend route for some beautiful scenery.
