How tight should the timing chain be?

1/2" - 3/4" of deflection when pulling up on the top run of the sync (aka, timing) chain.

As majority of timing chains are not perfectly round, make sure you spin the pedals backwards and check that timing chain has the required 1/2" play at is 'loosest' but not over-tight at it's tightest.

Good point. There are actually quite a few little nuances to managing sync chains, many of which you'll find more information about at the links on this posting from the archives.
