I have just had to change the wheel on my MB. it now won't go into top gear. They is a knob which i can adjust that changes the setting slightly, but i still can't get into top gear

the guy at the LBS sold me a wider wheel, is that what is causing it?

No, the wider wheel should have no affect on the derailleur setting.

There is a barrel adjuster at the shifter. Unscrew that 1/2 turn and see if that helps.

Could also be the stops on the rear mech (2 screws fairly close together to adjust) are out for the new wheel. If the chain keeps falling off the rings after adjustment, then you have gone too far.

Hmm... I'd say the cables have probably stretched a bit and need adjustment. If the shifting feels like it lacks "snap" then chances are that's the ticket. It kinda sneaks up on you. I just adjusted my deraillers yesterday. I didn't realize shifting had degraded so much.
