Road Bike Racing - Orrville Milk Race Report

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hold whatever un-funny jokes you may have, the race was in Orrville, OH and was smack in the center of Smith Dairy and Smuckers country.
Word of the race? Well, I can't pick one, so I'll pick a couple of them.
Roadkill, Windy, Fast
I raced in the Men's Cat4 race with Asmallsol, and the race was 30 miles, IIRC. Two or three climbs per lap, three laps. None of the climbs were too bad, even for me. Overall the race was pretty uneventful. Some guy crashed on the first turn, I went off the front twice to test my legs and watch the race mentality and decided that there was no way that a break could stay out; then I lost contact with the group on the last climb of the last lap, but I was hungry and not only caught back on, but launched to the front and joined the pinhead of the pack into the last turn sitting thrid wheel.
On the final turn going onto the finishing straight, I realized that the front three (inculding me) was riding too far right, and I'd be boxed in if I waited too long to sprint.
My teammate "TOM" got on my wheel and 500m from the line he yells "PIN IT MITCH!" so I jump up and sprint for all I'm worth to the finish. At the 100m line, he gets into the wind and I give up because it was an uphill, headwindy sprint that was much too long for me.
In the end, I sacrificed myself for my teammate, who unfortunately got 2nd. I ended up somehwere like 6th or 7th.
Maybe now I'll put in my upgrade points?

Great job! How many points do you have, Mitch?

I think like 26 or 27
:EDIT: The reason I haven't upgraded is because I was training for the Match Spint at nationals and my endurance suffered. After not being able to go to nats, I had to regain some endurance back, at the expense of my sprint. Therefore, I wasn't finishing too many of the hilly RR's around here.

I'm going to get a 'do work son' jersey. Because nobody wanted to in the cat 5 race. I ended up 4th, and did decent(for me) on the final sprint of the chase group. We could have easily bridged the gap to the 2 riders on the breakaway if people wanted to. CrimsonKarter21, Asmallsol, and myself may come up with a new trend-setting alternative cycling accessories company.

I got 4th in the 4's. I felt a bit crummy since thursday (think I'm coming down with something) but hung in there. Did a little bit of testing the field here and there (once with mitch). Coming into the last small climb which led to the final corner and straight, I was probably 15ish. I was on the inside coming into the corner and the people were already pushing it. I saw mitch's team maybe 10 yards ahead sprinting for the finish, so I kinda gave up on the thought of first, but wanted to get the best position possible. I rode the white line and passed a good amount of people. With about 100 m left, I was between the main pack and the 4 that were sprinting for the line, and I wasn't letting up until I saw my front wheel cross the line. One of the Spin racers sat up at like 50m to go and I manage to pass him.

I'd upgrade. Hell, I'm thinking about putting in for one anyway, and I only have ~7 points.

Matt, in the 4's do TT results matter for anything?
Right now I have between 14 and 22 depending on how they score some combined 3/4 races. I think that I'm going to wait until after collegiate season next year so that way I'll race b's instead of the a's. I'm done for RR for the year. Going up to school next weekend, and from there, its just a few MTB races.

No, no TT results. Try throwing in a good Cat 5 result to up your points.

hmm, only 2,382 miles away. You do realize that Orrville Oh is in OHIO. Only a few states away from cali. Not to mention, "school" is in the UP of michigan, which will be getting there first snow in October. Some people don't get the luxury of racing year around.

Anywhere to find pictures of the race? I can't remember seeing any photographers, but I was either trying to stay with you guys on the climbs or getting pissed at Mr. Brokenderailleurcannondaleguywhokeptboxingmein.

Were you thinking of me? I came to Livermore this Feb, you invited me out to some race, but I was nowhere near race shape at the time.

no although i remember inviting you out to that CRIT that I went down in haha...came out relatively unscathed though so it was a learning experience.

I think im thinking of Caloso...

Huh? I ain't no climber, but the only real climb was the one on Chippewa going up to Fulton. You turning wussy on me?
I checked out the race route as part of Cheri and I's Saturday ride. Even though we did 63 miles, I was still gonna come out for this race...but woke up coughing with tons of crud in my lungs and said F it.
Did they sweep the course at all? There was a lot of pea gravel at some of the intersections...and one spot where the BIG gravel from someone's driveway was all over Crown Hill, just before Back Massillon. I was figuring there might be some carnage on the turns if they didn't sweep the course that morning.
Glad you guys had fun, hopefully I can make it next year.

Let BFer's be the judge...

each lap was exactly 10 miles (although my garmin shut off a few times. Damn POS)
As for sweeping, there was one driveway that had pretty big rocks on the course. There was also a few intersections that had gravel in them, and one left hand turn that had some crap right at the apex.
