i bought a spare tube for my bike the other day and realized i got a 700x35 tube for my 700x23 tire. will this tube work in my tire or should i go get the correct size? i have put smaller tubes into larger tires with little problem before, but never a larger tube in a smaller tire.
while i am on the subject, i am using this bike for my 7-mile commute to work. when i get around to new tires, should i get some slightly wider tires like 35s to handle rough roads?

If it will fit inside the tire, without folding, it will be OK.
Try puffing a small amount of air into it, and inserting it into the tire for a test fit. Just enuf air to give it the correct shape.

If it will fit inside the tire,.
Which it won't.
Get the right size tube.

Even if you can cram it in there you'll probably get a pinch flat from the weight of the bike, never mind riding it.

Since the problem with mismatched tubes is usually trying to put a smaller tube into a bigger tire, and the rubber isn't up to the stretch, and becomes too thin in places.
Soooooo, I took a brand new 700X35-43C tube and puffed it up to just attain round size for measuring. It is self supporting at this stage, and measures 22mm outside diameter.
Therefore, it will not be stressed, won't be pinched, and can't be smaller than the tire that will surround it. The wall of the tube would actually be more resistant to pinching, because it is thicker.
In my case, with this brand new tube - it will fit in any cavity from 22 to 43mm.

and measures 22mm outside diameter.
Yes, but you're forgetting that tire measurements are also given by their outside diameter. The inside diameter on a 23mm tire is much less than 22mm. All I can say is good luck when you hit your first pothole.

This is also a larger tube than he says he has. I also doubt very much that the tire wall is going to measure in milimeters thick. You have to measure to be sure. I did.
