Touring - Cant be done on this bike-but I did it

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was told by my buddy I couldn't tour on my new Trek Soho 3.0 but I have been doing it. Of course I only do 3-4 day tours and only ride 50-75 miles/day but I didn't have any trouble with it. Only thing is my back ached from the handlebars being too low and my brooks seat made my butt hurt but other than that I see no problems. I might try a long haul trucker when I start doing longer rides but for these short 3-4 day rides this bike will do.

I've heard of people touring on single speeds and fixed gear bikes as well. I wouldn't enjoy doing so, but apparently they do-that's really all that matters.

The Soho 3.0 is a mid-range hybrid, should be fine for plenty of tours -- looks like it even has eyelets on the fork for panniers. Low gears, wide tires, the only major mod I'd consider is the bars. Either add bar-ends and Ergon grips, or swap out for trekking/butterfly bars. The extra hand positions make a difference.

AFAIK, low handlebars won't make your back ache. If you're not used to it, usually it hits you in the shoulders. You may want to tweak the position, and/or get a pro fit.

Thomas Stevens was the first person to bike across the country when he made it from San Francisco to Boston in 1884. This was before there was a real network of roads. He rode on this:

That looks vastly superior to the Trek 7200 I tour with.

You can tour on any bicycle as long as you are comfortable in it day in & day out. That's really the only thing that matters when touring, all the other stuff is a distant second.

He also went around the world. His diary/book which was written in 1887 is available for free

Where did you tour on your Soho?
