Advocacy & Safety - Car versus Bicycle Video (Commercial)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What do you think of this video? Who is in the wrong? If this occurred irL, can the driver be arrested if the cyclist fractured his wrist?

Wow, that is offensive. I was considering a Fiat for my next vehicle but I think I'll look at the Kia instead.
I dunno, it seems pretty lame of the cyclist to lean on the guys car like that. Not sure if causing the cyclist to fall is warranted, but if a cyclist was leaning on my car at a stoplight I'd get pissed for sure.

I don't know. The story seems weird, cause I would never expect it to happen. I see far more track-standing than resting, but it seems wrong of the driver to do that, downright evil.

LMAO!!!
I've seen this one before -- enjoyed it more this time!
It's really no different than what OUR reactions would be if someone just decided to "fondle" our two-wheeled babies!
It does, though, give a bit of a suggestion to the car vs. bike thing....
I think the cyclist got what he deserved.

I lolled. That ad never gets old.
No comments on the headphones causing the crash? :P

No comments on the headphones causing the crash? :PDefinitely the most surprising thing is that there have not been about 30 threads blaming the headphones for the cyclist crash.
Should we start one in road cycling, general cycling or maybe FG/SS. :popcorn

I had some clown lean up on my SLR McLaren. I gunned the engine and hopped it forward a couple feet, he went down for the count. I laughed so hard I missed the light.

Funny commercial. I hope no cyclist is really that stupid and thoughtless, although I saw one like that thirty-something years ago. Probably either wised up or killed by an irate motorist by now.

Hey, the cyclist stopped for three red lights in a row. He got what he deserved.

Sweat and paint make a bad combo.
I would have a different, slightly more passive reaction, but wouldn't be happy.

Fiat.com has a Comments page, where I sent them this:

This ad is poorly timed:
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1602831/dont_touch_my_car/
As the number of cyclists on the road is reaches all-time highs, the most useful message to convey is one of safety and consideration, so the roads can become safer for motorists and cyclists alike.
That ad plays on the current tensions between cyclists and motorists, and with no benefit: its underlying message is that cyclists and Fiat drivers are both jerks.
Is that really the message you want to convey?

Which were you trying to prevent by showing a lack of a sense of humor? ;)

While I do think it was a little rude of the cyclist to lean on the car(repeatedly), I don't think the driver adequately conveyed his displeasure. The beeping of his horn certainly wasn't doing it. He should have verbally said something. Non-verbal communication in this case, obviously failed.
Old, but still funny. And as a cyclist I would never dream of doing what the cyclist does in this commercial. As a driver I would do the same, or worse. Why would you think it OK to lean on someone's car?

T... its underlying message is that cyclists and Fiat drivers are both jerks.i
Nah - the underlying message is that the cyclist is a clueless, arrogant jerk and the driver tries his best to be courteous but when the cyclist ignores him, is clever enough to come up with an effective and appropriate countermeasure.

I think it's funny and nothing to be offended by--message received here is that a car in traffic isn't any faster than a bicyclist.

That sort of clear-eyed reasonableness completely untempered by overweening sensitivity won't gain you many friends among the sob sisters, pal.
If a car touches me, I consider that a serious incident. By the same token, if I touch a car, I consider that a serious incident too :D
That cyclist got what he deserves.
