Hey guys ive been riding bikes since i got my first one with training wheels when i was 3 lol. But now i started mountain biking. Now my friend left his Speicilized Hard Rock, hard tail bike over. So i took it out did some wheelies, and decided why not try some trails considering i live in Phoenix so lots of mountains and rock. So i took it out and had a blast. So i asked my friends borther to ask his brother if i can buy his bike. Its about 2 years old. And going to offer him $150. Now ive been looking around and HardRocks, new are about $300 MSRP. So how much would the be in a actual store? About $250. Now im not sure if i want a FS. The area im riding is very very bumpy. Locks of rocks etc. So i don't know if i would make it a lot easier on my body to have that back shock. What do you suggest i do? Thanks.

$150 for a hard rock isnt bad... mine retailed for about $600. for a complete bike thats a very good price, as long as its in decent shape

Hey impulse, welcome to the site.
How much are you looking to spend on a bike? What type of riding do you plan to do? Do you foresee this being a serious hobby or something to do every now and then when you're bored? Answer these questions and it will help us to give you better advice, and of course, don't be afraid to ask any other questions that come to mind.

Entry level bikes from bike shops start about $300 and go up, up and up from there. As you've already found out, there are a great deal of good buys on used bikes.
If your buddies is in relatively good shape, the $150 is a fair price and a good way to get started. Ride that bike till it dies and you'll soon find out what you want in a bike.

hey impulse
we are neighbors!
Welcome to the world of mountain biking!
I have been riding for 13+ years and absolutley love it!
In terms of great value bikes Specialized is always a good deal. We got my girlfriend (a newbie ) a HArd Rock and She Loves it! ...we took away some of the rotational weight by putting a spare pair of light wheels I had on it and she loves it more!
I am a big fan of supporting the LBS (local bike shop) but If you are just starting out the better deals are often had at places that move the most product (ie supergo) See Eric diwb there he will set you straight
If you have really deep pockets and are fairly fit or are super motivated than research like crazy and go big!!! there is no subsitute for a light bike, with excellent components, bullet proof wheels , and plush non bobing suspension!
hope this helps!
