According to cyclingnews, the IOC is considering removing cycling (and weightlifting) from the Olympics due to drug problems. That would be a huge blow to the sport.

Source? Is that in the article?

That would be horrible to see. Then again, baseball was removed and no real damage was done to the sport.

The more accurate statement is that WADA has recommended the removal of weightlifting and cycling from the olympics.

Yep - I was wrong. It is WADA's recommendation. Here is the link:

Holy cow - now cycling is being lumped together with weight lifting. That shows you how bad things are perceived to be.

What's not so surprising is that she's from the Spain.

UCI president Pat McQuaid:
"I'm disgusted and annoyed that it's a Spanish girl who is the first positive doping test from the Games,..."

Almost sounds as if he's expecting more positives... gee, that'd be a surprise.

edit -- as long as it wasn't the 1st and it wasn't a Spaniard it'd be ok w/ McQuaid? I know he's down on the Spaniards testing (or lack thereof), but he sounds like a tool.

I just hope Sanchez and his hommies weren't doping either (or caught doping), that would royally suck.

That country has never taken doping seriously. At least not anti-doping. Why do you think most of the big name pros live there? Girona is like the doping capitol of the world.

This is all speculation, of course. except the first part.

It also shows how weightlifting and cycling, fringe sports in terms of the Olympics, are judged by completely different standards than track + field and swimming, the sports that draw ratings yet have positive tests all over the place.

Bingo! It's all about the ratings because as much as the IOC and host country trumpets being about athletes, ideals, spirit, etc. it all comes down to money. Networks and advertisers pay, the IOC rakes in cash, the host country rakes in cash and recognition, and the wheels on the bus go round and round. Positive tests mean no participation? That means track and field is shot, maybe swimming too. Now we have no need to hold an Olympic meet!

Yahoo! Sports has a video clip of the official announcement (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/video).

The more accurate statement is that WADA has recommended the removal of weightlifting and cycling from the olympics.

An even more accurate statement is that the chief of WADA has said WADA might recommend removal.

Read it again. It says they MIGHT recommend removal. They will watch the Olympics and make their recommendation in November.
