I want to try it but it is banned in Whistler. Very illegal to do. It would be a blast...curious about braking though

Breaking hah. The first time you go down you instictively reach for the levers (we left them on this time) but its just like skiing-you turn the whole bike and bleed speed off. Don't just turn the bars...it gets messy

Yeah I figured thats what it would be like. Oh well can't do it anyways so it makes no difference to me :D...

Here in NJ, there are back ways to get into ski resorts (like Mountain Creek) but actually I don't think you need to even do that, there are typically old ski resorts that have gone out of business. However, the ski runs are typically still there so I think those are your best bet to find slopes to bike down to. I know a few in NJ that might be doable...

I went skiing up at brighton last week (Those of you familiar with snowboarding know what it is) and I saw a couple guys on bikes. They weren't ski bikes, but they had studded tires...It was pretty cool looking, I'd like to give it a try but you can't ride the lift, you have to push them to the top...

Where I ski / Snowboard, they are allowing them, but there is less um, Yeti's here. we did have some serious opposition to snowboarders going on the hills about 1990 or so, but heck, half of us are on snowboards now, ok, about 35%.
Looks like fun Im going to give it a try once I get a chance.

G'day,

Done some snow biking before and although it was fun, the novelty wears off pretty quickly. It's very tricky and a bit like riding on hard sand pack at spots and very soft sand at another. Also brakes freeze up and makes the brakes super tight and pads rock hard so if you are running cable brakes, you'll need to back your barrel adjuster all the way in or slacken the cable. Hydraulic users get very poor brake response (ie, sticky brakes) so it is a lot of fun watching people fly down the hill out of control.

Turning on snow at speed is near impossible unless you do a motorcross style leg turn. Turning the handlebar (unless done at walking pace) just dig the front tyre into the snow.

Oh and the best tyre we found that works in the snow was the old Panaracer Spikes mud tires. They work even better than studs in snow, but not so good on sheet ice where studs have no peers.

I prefer snowboarding now. Easier and much more fun.
