Such a beautiful ride. I will either be doing the Solvang Double or attending a wedding that weekend but have fun!

Any particular reason why the route takes I-5 from San Clemente to the Las Flores exit and on to Oceanside instead of the surface route from the Orange County line past the Power Plant through the State Beach and onto and across the Marine base at the Las Flores exit? If nothing else you miss the obligatory shot of your bikes next to the TANK CROSSING sign.

This is my route from Pasadena to San Diego if it's of any help. http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/MTBMaven-s-Pasaden-to-San-Diego-Route

When we did the first ride on which the data were recorded, Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base was closed due to military exercises. The road was closed right before the tank tunnel, and the official detour was via I-5 Fwy.
In the meantime the base is open again, and the next ride will follow the bike path through Camp Pendleton.

Personally, I'd put my bike on the Metrolink and exit somewhere in northern Orange County. Avoid all the heavy congestion. Cyclists to take the trail adjecent the Los Angeles River, but the Long Beach area is terribly busy and crime can be a problem. Great Adventure cycling has a very good map of the routing south of that point.

Actually, part of the fun is riding through L.A. and its different neighborhoods. We go through downtown and then get onto Western Avenue which leads all the way to Long Beach. Most neighborhoods are Hispanic, and people are bike friendly. We leave so early that there is virtually no traffic, and the air is still relatively clean. Western seems to be better than the river bike path (no glass, sand, homeless, gangs, etc.)

Good on ya. I have ridden through some seemly sketchy neighborhoods and people leave you alone. Granted I don't take my right or way quite as much as I do in say Laguna Beach.
