Good deal?
Thanks bf.
I don't think so.
I think you should spend $150 more and get a decent new bike.

Alright. Consider your advice taken. :thumb:
Are you willing to throw out a few names for me to research? Assume I can spend $400.
Edit: $400 i think is a low budget. I dunno. What do you suggest for a beginners budget?

$400 will get you a solid bike. look at nothing other then full chromoly frame fork bars crank.
http://www.bmx-forum.com/showthread.php?t=32257 i found this thread...
im a taller guy 6'4", DK Sixpack? The 48 laced rims would probably be better for my weight... 175 lbs.

48 is not necessary at all. I really don't see the problem with the bike for only 150.00

Go with this.
http://www.danscomp.com/101408.php?cat=BIKES
That seems like a nice bike. I want this for street duty and some trail riding on the side.
Do you guys suggest pegs on both sides or is that just preference?
minichamp31
08-12-08, 08:39 AM
That's preference. You could run them on both sides to see what side you are more comfortable grinding on, then take the other side off.
Yeah. The wrap is decent. You could also look at Kink's. There really good for there price. I would reccomend the whip or transition.
How do we feel about gyros? Unnecessary until higher skill level, at which point they can be added if need be?
FuzzyRyder

just run no brakes or a long straight cable, noone uses gyro's anymore.

You know what? Probably I don't. I like midschool bmx and I will leave my comment to myself about you, anyway.
In short, buy what you can afford. A bike from Walmart is better than no bike. A bike like that Felt has to be bought from a local bike shop so it's way better than a bike from Walmart and miles better than no bike at all.

yeah but if he can afford the spend $400 on a good complete, then there is alot wrong with that $150 heap.

08-12-08, 10:46 AM
Assumingly, he has 400.00 then I would pick this one. http://www.danscomp.com/101537.php?cat=BIKES
Maybe not, if you are a weight weenie. Otherwise, I would have to pick the kink line of bikes.
FuzzyRyder

That integral is a solid bike for sure, But i would look for something with a cassette hub before i would pick that. But there is nothing wrong with that bike, a Cassette will just make things cheaper in the long run if you want to swap to a smaller gear ratio.

Stolen Wrap for 320 (20.75" TT) or Heist for $420.
Yeah. The wrap is decent. You could also look at Kink's. There really good for there price. I would recommend the whip or transition. Whip maybe. Transition no, too short TT. Do not consider any < 20.75".
Your choices in a complete are limited. You should ride a 21" frame for your height. It is however personal preference. But 20.5" I have to believe will be too short for you.
The camp will be split over this one, but it has a 21 and solid parts. http://www.harobikes.com/bmx/bikes/forum_counterpart_lite.php

I have a friend that has a 20" tt and he's is 6'4". He says it's comfortable. TT length is a preference too.

it is. i have a friend who's 6' 2", and he likes a 20.5. i like anything 20.5 and bigger and im only 5' 10".
everything in bmx is preference.

Exactly what I said.

If you take the law of averages into account, most riders over 6'2" are most comfortable on a 21. We are supposed to be helping the mate, not complicate choices with odd recommendations. Yes, a 21 complete would be harder to find. Especially at the 400 price point. The Haro I linked MSRP's for 5 and probably can be had for a little less than that. A quality 20.75 should suffice as well. The Wrap with it's 20.75 and 48 rear is a very good value at $330.

the wrap is a pretty decent bike.
I rode a Haro F2 today. I felt very cramped. I believe it is a 20.3". It also felt very very heavy. I think it weighs 34 lbs.
My LBS owner told me to check out some 24" bikes... I was wondering what you guys thought about that.
The wrap looks nice to me... :)

24"? usually used for racing and cruising. i dont think ive ever seen something like someone doing a feeble or whatever on a 24"

no there are suitable 24's but it dosent feel like a bmx.

personally, the FELT's not that bad for the price...
If the Fork's REALLY that bad to ya guys... spend a little bit of money on an S&M Pitch Fork, seriously...
Cheap fork, strong, and one that's been SWORN BY for more than a decade now by MANY riders.
and plus, back in the day, 31.5 pounds is REALLY lightweight for a Street, Freestyle, Dirt, or Trail bike...
my bike's 31 pounds, and this was a RACE bike back in the day! HAHAHAHAHA!!!
I brought my bike to my previous job one day, and my coworker thought it was a pretty good racing bike (by the way, my coworker was Jeff Kosmala... Yes, "THE KOS", the one the Kos Kruiser was named after)
so yeah, don't even complain about the weight cuz' if you do,...
well, then...
you're wussies...
Alright; I've decided I'm willing to spend $500 including helmet and gloves. I'm going to want gloves for when I'm learning. Danscomp has 10% entire order coupons and shipping is $30ish. Safety stuff sounds like it's right around $50. Let's just round up to $90 for shipping and gear. $550 ($500 + 10% discount) - $90 = $460 to spend on a bike.
The guy on the beginners bmx thead I linked before seemed to really like the Eastern Element. It's light, 26.5 lbs... it's sharp lookin... it's also a 20.75... and I like that it has the 25/9 combo, I like the idea of the increased ground clearance.
The Wrap looked like something I would enjoy... but I'm willin to spend a little bit more for a bike. I'd rather do it right the first time.
What do you guys think? Are there any bikes that *really* stand out to you around $460 not including shipping that would be good? Maybe something 21" or 21.5"?
I appreciate the help, by the way. You all are invaluable to me making an informed decision.

Nothing from eastern.
Nothing from eastern.
I believe you, but is there a specific reason? Or is this your personal preference.
Thanks. :)

Stretch a little and get a Roc if you decide on a 20.75.
http://www.danscomp.com/101672.php?cat=BIKES
Personally I can not tell why, but Easterns seem to have a bad rep here and other places. Still thinkin you should go 21 and check out that Haro. Any local dealers near that can get you a 21? Even if you have to pay a little more for one there it's worth it. It's nice to have them backing the bike and not have to deal with issues via internet or phone should they arise.
A side thought just came in. Give Dan's a call. Maybe they have a or some one off completes that are 21's. Since they are not nearly as popular as 20.5/20.75 they just might not be listed.

Eastern just makes trashy bikes. The put alot of unsealed garbage in and they fall apart. Look at fit, kink, integral, stolen, dk, wethepeople, premium and even some of the newer higher end haro stuff is starting to get dialed!
Street rider
08-13-08, 01:34 PM
eastern's stuff is junk. except for sprockets, but its hard to **** up a sprocket.
like fuzzy said, check out fit or kink. they have tons of really nice starter bikes. stolen and kink too.
Oh, I also noticed something. I have generic skate shoes, and when I was riding the Haro at the LBS I noticed my feet slipped off the pedals really easily. Was that due to pedal design or is there a certain shoe I should be looking at?
Street rider
08-13-08, 05:12 PM
generic skate shoes? you mean like something from payless?
and no its probably more of a you problem than shoes or pedals.
So I decided to go for the Wrap at first. I like this idea because it's an inexpensive starter that is pretty light and 20.75". I can always add a sealed mid bb and a gyro later. I was thinking about the Heist, but it seems like the spanish bb, 25/9 gearing, and odyssey lever is the only real difference. I don't think these things warrant a $90 higher price tag for me who is just beginning. Plus... I'd rather save the money so that when I outgrow the Wrap (which should be a while from the reviews I am hearing) I can custom build something with a 21.25" or so frame.
Does anyone know if the brake cable is 'linear'? I'm still unsure of the real difference between this and another cable, but I hear it's the better cable for a bmx setup. I guess it doesn't bind when you do tailwhips etc.

I was thinking about the Heist, but it seems like the spanish bb, 25/9 gearing, and odyssey lever is the only real difference. Contact them directly. Find out if the frames and hubs are the same. If the Heist has better than it would probably be worth the 90 to get sealed BB and those upgrades. If not sorta a toss up. Don't worry about the cable. Shoes and cables wear over time and when needed upgrade later. Not a huge difference in a stock brake set up and a custom picked parts one. Just ride :thumb: Good Luck.
Haha, I'm flipflopping like crazy. I checked out some more reviews and thought about it some more... and the Kink Whip seems like where it's at for me.
Sealed mid bb, 25/9 gearing, and i read somewhere that the alienation rims were better than the generic alex rims... plus i can always drill and tap the Kink for gyro tabs if I feel like it. that sort of work doesn't scare me.

Focus dude, focus :backpedal:....KINK WHIP BIKE 2009
Full chromoly main frame, Means it is not full CroMo. Only the 3 main tubes are. The seat & chain stays are not. At your size you need full CroMo. Get the Wrap and be on your way :ride:.
OOOOOOOOOoooh.
I did not notice that.
Well that helps things out a little... sort of. haha. DayuM! Focus.... focus... Maybe that's why I heard from a few sources that it was getting banged up on the chainstay pretty good. Why would they do that to me!
Stolen wrap... :)
