Hi there, im new here and this is my first post. I have just recently decided to start riding again after a 10 year break :P and bought a Jamis Dakar from Performance Bikes.

Anyways, in the last week I took a nice spill while riding (and pcked up a nice little battle scar on the frame)and since then my gears havent been shifting correctly. For example; to shift too second gear i have to shift too third and forth for third and so on. Except for fifth but thats a different story (almost seems it skips it entirely) Now what bothers me more, is that when i put the bike upside down and just rotate the peddals, it shifts perfectly. I was hoping someone here might have an idea of whats going on, other wise im probably gona just take it down to the shop. Thanks.

Mark

Did your bike fall against the rear derailler? If so, you may have bent its hanger, knocking it out of alignment. Take it to the LBS and have them check it. They may be able to bend it back in line or replace it. It's also possible that the derailer just needs to have the cable tightened a bit.

A bike will sometimes shift a bit differently when you are riding since the chain has more tension than when upside down or in a stand.

I've fallen on my derailler 4 times already, some pretty hard hits. It still shifts correctly but I'm getting paranoid and I'm gonna have it checked out at the shop.

Have you tried putting more torque on the pedals and shifting while upside down?

Could be something flexing as you're pedaling?

supcom: No it didn't fall on the derailers. I remember because i got a few good bruises still on my left hip. I was thinking that the cable needed some tightened. Guess il check that out.

slvoid: I dont realy know what would be flexing while i pedal. Considering im 5'10" about 190-200lbs im probably putting good amount of tourqe.
