Introductions - I don't own a bike but... anybody?!?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I don't own a bike, and actually haven't ridden a bike in well over 4 years... but I've done an aweful lot of thinking about them lately. I'm not sure if I want/need a road bike, or a mountain one... My riding adventures will be mostly road related, but I might occassionally find myself off-road. Anybody have recommendations as to what to buy?!? Price ranges?!? Anything useful?!? (I'll keep looking around on the forum for info also. It's all very interesting to me.)

If the whole bike thing pans out, I'm also considering selling my car and just using my bike all the time, as right now my car sits in a parking lot for over two months un-used (while I continue to make payments on it = ********!), while I travel all over the country for work. That said, whatever I get will have to be comfortable for rides of upwards of 60 to 100 miles at a time for my commutes during the week while I'm home.

Ideas are good... Sweet site!

You know, you might want to consider a folding bike. You'd be able to take it with you if you fly somewhere. Seriously, I'd check out that option.

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions :) !

Welcome treehouseguy,

I got back into biking about 8 years ago and at the time bought a mountain bike. I have never actually taken it anywhere but dirt/paved roads and last year bought a road bike. Now I think I need something for touring. You might go to some shops and ride the various bikes, mountain, hybrid, road and see what feels best for you. There are several threads on this board that deal with low cost bikes, commuting, etc. I have had good luck posting ads on craigslist with what I am looking for and usually have around 10 bikes to choose from. I have never had a bad experience or been ripped off either but I am sure that does happen. Good luck in your search and welcome to the forums!

Keep it safe
