I'm building out a bike for a long trek down the East Coast, and am thinking about going with Shimano XT MTB drivetrain components for the expanded gear range and with Ultegra bar-end shifters. Does anyone know whether indexed shifting will be possbile with such a setup? Otherwise, I won't bother to make the investment in new bar cons, as I already have a set of friction Suntour ends I can scavenge, and the money might be better spent on an upgrade to V-brakes...

Thanks in advance!

My Trek 520 came with LX rear components and Duraace barcon shifters. It works great. And I'm sure the XT would be great also.

Great, thanks! How happy have you been with the LX components? How many speeds is your setup? I'm starting with a Trek 720 frameset and working toward something essentially like the current 520 build, but hopefully lighter and significantly cheaper... those 520s are nice bikes!
