Advocacy & Safety - Questions on neighborhood training rides

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I always ride around the place where I live during training rides but lately I have been getting a lot of hate from certain people. I always watch out for cars and avoid people and stay on the side of the road that has less obstacles. In Sicilia I never had a single problem with anyone at all. But since moving to KY people are getting on my nerves. There is a t section that I went through today and I saw a truck at the stop sign. He let me pass so I went. I was on the left side of the road and there were a van and a car parked on the road and a person who had just moved in less then a week ago and his younger brother were driving to my right. I kept going on as usual but when I returned he stopped me and told me that I ran his son off the road and that he would make sure that I would have some trouble if I did it again. The audacity amazes me.

Our neighborhood is divided into two sections, Crosscreek and Crosscreek 2 (that is the actual name for the second part). Months ago they started building low income housing so we have been getting some interesting characters that have some very big ego's and love to threaten others. Some 15 year old ******* that lives in that section basically stares me down everytime I go down and does some kind of yelping sound. I know he isn't ******** but he is very very stupid. It also helps that his father has a very bad drinking problem and does the same when I go by. I ignore them but one time about 4-5 of them were in the middle of the road with bikes and refused to move. I went in the grass and continued on and they had fun trying to follow me while I flew past them at 22 mph.

I don't understand why some Americans are so hostile towards everyone. It confuses me. I know Kentucky isn't the intellectual center of the world and it is a very very long story on why we are here but come on this is just stupid. What am I doing wrong? What should I do? I am thinking about just doing group rides with some friends at a bike shop that I know in the next town. But should I continue to ride where I live? I have lived here for about 4 years so I people know me and I have never had problems with them. I'm not the kind of person who just ignores people especially when they disrespect me and threaten me. I am sorry if this is in the wrong area if it is I can repost.

You call the cops, explain the repeated harassment being directed your way repeatedly by those who are doing so. If the cops do their job, they will park an officer in the vicinity and apprehend those who are giving you trouble.

As to KY, I've never lived there, but no place is the intellectual center of the world. Look around you. Whatever you see that is developed, or nature centers that are preserved, infrastructure that works, all of that stuff was accomplished at the hands of intelligent individuals. If you keep an open mind, you'll find that the world is filled with bright, intellectual individuals, no matter where you look. There are also crude, corrupt, evil types everywhere, also.

In China, we are told, the culture frowns upon murder, weapons, etc. Yet, a couple of our citizens were assaulted, and at least one killed by a deranged individual who, after committing the atrocity, jumped to his own death.

If this pattern of harassment is predictable, I would not hesitate to carry a cell phone and dial 911 at first sight of the perpetrators. Tell the cops where you are and ask for immediate response. Bait those who would chase you long enough for the cops to get there.

I would not put up with the situation you describe.

Good luck, but don't count all of us Americans among that group.

Definitely call law enforcement and make them aware of the situation. If they are predictable, maybe check into some sort of helmet camera, and get a video of their actions?

Welcome to the Amerika of the 21st century. In reverse order....your blabbering ****** is probably an honor student at a local public school, vomited up from grade to grade so that he eventually leaves the system. If he and his buddies are drug dealers, the cops won't do a thing since they are probably getting a nice cut for themselves, anyway.

As for the first one...explain a bit more. 'You ran his son off the road?' Where did that come from. Did you run his son off the road with your bike? (bully for you! ;))

Sounds like you've out incomed your neighborhood, I'm sure property values have dropped like a rock considering all the bums that now inhabit the local free housing.

Time to cut your loses before some meth head decides your bike is worth more at the pawn shop than your life is to him, also consider a conceal carry permit.

Calling the cops won't do a bit of good unless they just happen to be in violation of their parol, and it's their third strike. Otherwise you'll never see them coming the next time after a visit from law enforcment.

On edit: You mention interesting characters and low income; this normally equates some kind of government check collectors. The 15yo that yelps could be laying the groundwork to make the case for his check he expects to start drawing in a few years. Some of the others “interesting characters” could be working on more incidents that will be given to their case worker to help assure their mental checks keep flowing in. My wife and I both see these types of individuals almost everyday. It would seem that not everyone can fake a disability, but if all the right paperwork is submitted a mental health screening can result in a nice payday also.

You lost any interest I had in your situation when you used a racial slur.

I live in Ky. I have no trouble at all with people, drivers, or anyone. Must be you and your terrible attitude. Change your attitude and you may have improved fortunes.

*******s? how is that offensive? White kids dressing up in baggy pants, fake chains, shoes, listening to demeaning music and threatening others shouldn't offend you.

Do you find the n-word offensive? Calling someone a "*******" is calling them a white you-know-what.

Find another route or ride with the bike shop folks. Calling the cops isn't going to do a thing other than anger the people causing you the problem. For sure, it will set up for worse abuse at some later date.
