Life in Hell was one of Matt Groening's early successes as a cartoonist. It was published in the San Diego Reader, which is a San Diego free newspaper that became the paper to pick up every Thursday to find out what was going on in San Diego. Eventually they evolved into one of the best journalistic rags on the west coast with lots of investigative reporting, etc.... San Diego is definitely not hell, but noone missed Life in Hell when they read the Reader. It's a San Diego thing, I guess. If it was published elsewhere, I'm sure we'll find that out.

I traveled regularly to NYC in the 80s and seems like I recall Life In Hell in the Village Voice. Atlanta and Charlotte have "Creative Loafing" magazine and I think it might have been in there too.

Life in Hell is published in the Georgia Straight in Vancouver last i checked. FFwd in Calgary too. Sadly, it isn't published online anywhere.

This came up the other day when I was scolded for admitting that I dislike futurama and all I got was a blank stare I mentioned how I loved Life In Hell even before there was a Simpsons. I don't understand how people don't know that darker origin of the Simpsons. So strange.

I spent some time working on the outskirts of Hell (http://www.hell2u.com/about.php) this past summer. It's pretty easy to get there, go south off M-36 on Graves road at the Livermore Cemetary, when you hit Doyle road go east (go west by mistake and you end up in Bruins Lake) until it deadends at Kelly, head south on Kelly and you'll find yourself smack dab in the middle of Hell.

There are great places to ride near Hell. MTBers can ride the regionally famous Potawatomi trail (http://content.mtbr.com/pscTrails/United,States,Trails/Michigan/,Potawatomi/PRD_168601_4555crx.aspx), part of the Pickney State Recreation area trail system, home to the outlaw MTB group of Hellriders (http://hellridersmtbc.com/HyperframeI.html). Roadies looking for organized rides can take the 76 or 100 mile One Helluva Ride (http://www.aabts.org/ohr/) in July, sponsored by the Ann Arbor Bicycle Touting Society and ride through Hell as part of a group tour.

As you can see there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy the cycling Life in Hell.

Then there's the Hotter Than Hell ride in Texas every year.

Pinckney was a great place to mountain bike. Plenty of nice trails. I've ridden through Hell... and I've ridden through Climax too. :D
