My daughter, Angela (8) said to me while she lay in bed, "I spy something that annoyed you when I was little."

I looked around the shadowy room. "What, dear?"

"Remember, you took the batteries out of it because it annoyed you too much," she reminded me. "Remember, I used to sleep with it, but in the middle of the night, it would start singing,

'I love you, you love me,
We're best friends as friends should be
With a great big hug and a kiss from me to you
Won't you say you love me too?'"

Oh, no! It was the Purple Monster!!!

(That's "Barney," the annoying purple battery-operated toy.)

It's OK. I was scared of Fatcat.

Not surprising. Any fully grown adult in an animal costume would be terrifying to a toddler. You see it all the time. Some eighteen month old is presented to a freakishly large cat in pants - of course they're gonna cry. But boneheaded tv producers persist in making these shows. What exactly do they think they're teaching the kids with these things?

In my view Animal Planet - you know, actual animals doing actual animal things - has far more viewing value for a preschooler than the Wiggles or Fatcat and their freakshow antics. And you can't beat Play School - the best show for under 5's hands down. They should export it.
