Pacific Northwest - Heads up to Seattle riders

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A co worker today said he heard on KIRO radio the the SPD is cracking down the helmet law. He said they have written 200 tickets at $80 a pop. I have not been able to find anything on line to corroborate this rumor.
Disclaimer: I am not advocating the use of helmets one way or another, I thought I would just give a heads up about it.

FWIW Long gone are the days that I ride with a nekked head. In my youth I did foolish things like bomb down canyon roads drafting cars at 40 mph sans helmet.

'heard' on kiro radio? AM talk radio by a shock jockey perhaps?
maybe they'll use this new push (if there is one) to crack down on CM later this month..
last year they tried pulling over everyone that didn't have helmets - kind of like herding cats.

I guess I'll start wearing my lid for the 3 miles r/t to the grocery store and the 0.75mi r/t to the dry cleaners. $80 is pretty steep.

i think the city has written a couple of hundred TOTAL since the law was enacted 5? years ago now...radio shock jockey probably referencing this.
the city mayor, city's top cop as well as king county all hold a 'hands off' policy regarding critical mass.
I do not believe this has changed.

Ironic but the day beforw I was talking to a co worker who is a motorcycle rider. She asked me if there was a bike helmet law in Seattle. My response was yes but I have never heard anyone getting a ticket for it.
I think Bekologist maybe right here, probably the total amount of tickets they have handed out in the last 5 years.

I miss the days of the wind blowing through my hair. But after a nasty accident a few years ago, I never comute or ride without it anymore,

Same here. Even w/o a helmet, us bald guys don't get that sensation... unless the wind blowing through my beard counts.

I'm not sure most programming on KIRO really counts as "shock radio" type stuff...
