i'm new to to all this, and i'm thinking of putting together my own ss bike using a Leader 720tr frame. just wondering how much the rest of the components will cost. I know i can go cheap, and i know i can go uber expensive, but on average, how much did you spend on components for your bike? Or.. if you bought a ready made one, how much did you spend?

My build isn't anything spectacular (mostly stock) and I spent a lot more than I'd wanted. All in all around $1000 CAD I think.

drive train was ~225, pedals ~50, wheelset including tubes/tires ~250, seatpost/saddle ~100, headset/stem/handlebars ~80, brake ~30, fork ~80.

815 for everything except the frame :(

My SS was about $288 or so. Buy an old road bike and re-space the cassette, it is the best way to go. These generic "Single-speed specific" frames are just the cycling companies cashing in on people who don't know anything. For fixed, just scour eBay for something used and cheap.

I'd say maybe in the range of $450-$480 for complete bike and some swaps.

My Fuji Conversion (not finished fully) around 600 at the moment. I regret every penny. I could have bought the bike of my dreams.

Looks nice js! What frame is it?

Oh, and my current single speed cost $12 and a old BMX freewheel I found in the bottom of the box. Correction: $17. I sprung for some short chainring bolts.

So, quit while you are ahead....sell the frame/fork for $100 and use the parts on a track frame. Get a BikeIsland frame for $110, it is going to be way better than a Fuji, unless it is a top of the line FUji....

Throwing good money after bad is not fun.

ediy: that is a Colnago Sport frame I bought on CL a few years ago. It was made in Mexico for Colnago....but it is a great frame nonetheless.

I spent a ton on my first conversion, definitely more than I should have - I didn't really know what I was doing. I should have been more patient and learned more before I delved in. That said, I still really like that conversion and it is still my daily ride.

Damn, I've spent way more than anybody has listed. I have 3 bikes and am considering a 4th soon. Its what I like to do with my "disposable income". I spend money trying new stuff like saddles, stems, tires, and bars (often monthly). Oh well.

I started with a bare frame. The rest of the bike is made of solid but not fancy parts and cost $800 (not including the frame).

It was about twice as much as I had budgeted.

Found my stock '08 Pista on Ebay for $465 shipped. I've since replaced the pedals, handlebars, stem, cog, lockring, and saddle for an additional ~$200.

My first fixie was an old Concord that I converted. Probably spent around $200-$250 total, but probably could have done with half that.

Wheels alone on the Iro were $750, $110 for drive chain, $300 for frameset with HS, free saddle...yea a lot.
If you intend on using your bike for its purpose then don't get too caught up on how much you spend (assuming it's all for a purpose). You buy crappy parts, you get crappy performance.

My conversion costs

150-geared bike
110 rear wheel
60 for cranks and chainring
25 for bb
15 for chain
10 for rear cog
5 for the lock ring
50 for new stem setup

Which ends up being somewhere around 425 without the pedals for a much cooler bike than some comparable prebuilt bike. I am expecting to have to drop around 500 or so total.

Mmm, the new one was $240 for frame and wheels. $90 for the fork, $100 for crank/cog/lockring, $25 headset, $20 chain, $20 bars/stem, $60 saddle, $20 seatpost, $30 tires, $10 tubes, $20 front brake.

The beater, $220 rear wheel, $40 crank/b.b, $20 front wheel, $45 cog/ring, $ 20 post, rest was free or extras I had.

right around 200, but you are looking at a WAY better frame set than i went with (mine is an old french road bike frame)

I don't know about the kind of thing you are looking for, but it seems to me that you can get better deals on parts than you will on a pre-fab bike (i ended up with some decent stuff fairly cheaply)

730 after tax.

Stock MASI fixed with no changes other than 18T cog I bought and installed. Eventually I'd like to get a nicer saddle and some egg beaters but as it is it's pretty good
