Survived my first sprint triathlon last night. A great small (400 participants) first-time event, held in Brighton, MI. This was my first tri, and I only entered three weeks ago! Sponsored by a local running store (Running Fit in Novi, MI), and they did a GREAT job. It was well-organized, well-staffed and a heck of a lot of fun. Perfect conditions, too...water temp was 77 degrees, air temp almost 80 and bright sunshine.

I was scared to death of the swim portion, but I did better than I anticipated...here's the details:

Overall time: 1:49:14
Swim: 24:41
T1: 1:38
Bike: 45:30
T2: 2:22
Run: 35:00

Felt great, LOVED EVERY MINUTE!!

So, you triathlon vets...how does this look for a newb?

You finished, you had fun, you overcame fear, you established your personal best, you've got a new obsession. What could have gone better?! Congrats!!!

The fun part for me is figuring out all the hundreds of little tips and tricks, both in training and racing, that shave off time. Also what NOT to do. Tri's keep the brain in shape, too.

So when's your next race?

It was a sprint distance. I loved it so much, I might do another one on 8/24! :D

good on you, well done!!

you need to specify actual distances as there are several interpretations of 'sprint' distance.

Congrats!!!

I did my first tri this past weekend too. It was a sprint distance as well (.5/12/3). Mine broke down like this:

S: 10:49 (22nd)
T1: 1:47
B: 34:10 (53rd)
T2: 1:17
R: 25:55 (170th)

T: 1:14:00 71st/250

Not too shabby of a time considering I wrecked on a ride 3 weeks prior bruising my ribs and went into the event with limited training... And yes, my running really is that bad, I did not walk nor bonk.

I loved it so much I lined up 3 races next year... culminating in a half-IM.

A half mile swim in less than 11 minutes? That's pretty impressive.

So my background is swim based... I swam in college for a large div 1 school... even though I didn't touch the water training wise, it wasn't that difficult. I had more problems with the way the swim was setup.. 20-25 yards to the first turn. I was on the outside of about a 100 man wave and basically was forced way too wide costing myself some extra distance. Why they couldn't have put the turn 50-100 yards away from the beach, I don't know.

The winning swim split time was 9:30 for reference, so it was pretty close to 1/2 mile.

Given some more training (especially running wise), I think I might do ok at these things.

From the sounds of it, you're doing OK already! :thumb:

Congratulations! Spent the weekend in Petosky. Waiter at P.F.Chang's today in Lansing said his sister just did her first triathlon this weekend there.

You gonna do another one this season, yet?

How'd you train for it?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Congrat's. I also did my first tri two weeks ago. I will admit that on the bike portion I got destroyed by the field. The tri was on Lake Erie and because of high winds they cancelled the swim portion of the event. So they added a one mile run to the start of the tri to even out T1.

159 people

Mile one = 6:21 9th
Bike 12.5 = 40:48 39th I got passed by 30 people and did not pass a single person Ave. 18.5 MPH
3.1 mile run = 20:10 21st place
T1 = 48 seconds
T2 = 38 seconds 1:08 total time
age 47

I was racing with a trek 7.6 hybrid and no bike shoes so I was at a little disadvantage but I need a ton more bike training. Considering I have a running background and no biking experience I felt good about the overall result. I only trained for 3 weeks on the bike but no realize I have a long way to go before I can even begin to compete on the bike portion of a tri.

Camberish,

18.5 miles ph and you didn't pass anyone??? On a hybrid and no bike shoes. You are an animal (IMHO!!)

Thank goodness I wasn't there I would have been so totally blown away.

Great job and keep at it.

Morrison.

Thanks for the encouragement, but the course was very flat and fast per the other racers. Clearly I was over-matched by real bikers on this day. I am a runner pretending to be a biker. I really don't know the first thing about biking and it showed. My only saving grace is that I'm in overall good shape.

I read the comments on this thread sometimes and I don't even understand half the biking language used here on this site.
